Are you canceling plans for the 4th?

I celebrated on Juneteenth. While I will spend at least part of Independence Day thinking about the ideals of the US and strategies for supporting freedoms of many kinds, I’m not cancelling any plans because I haven’t (yet) made any.

No were actually buying fireworks this year but usually don't. Time to celebrate!

Never once in my life have I ever gone to or hosted a July 4 picnic or event with warm, fuzzy feelings of patriotism. It’s a summer celebration for burgers and s’mores to me, and that’s pretty much it. So we’ll do our usual cookout AND do our part to protect abortion access.

When I was a child my parents and I would go down to the mall to watch A Capitol Fourth and my dad, who was a child during the Great Depression and fought in WW2 and Korea, would sing all the patriotic songs with tears rolling down his cheeks. Fast forward to 2017-now and my dad could barely choke out the national anthem for the veterans and Memorial Day parades he faithfully attended every year, so saddened and disgusted he was by our country. He died in late 2020. For his sake I will him a few patriotic tunes to myself perhaps.

My eldest is performing with her chorus for the Macy’s fireworks show and is very excited to be on national tv. I will be schlepping her there and home I expect so I really have zero plans otherwise. The rest of my family will be in the country at a James Taylor concert which will probably be a lot of fun.

4th of July celebrations provide ideal opportunities to mobilize and protest. Bring your signs and whistles and drums and and voices and don’t let the ‘Murica crowd have their fun. It’s about independence, our independence.

To those of you who are canceling celebrations or grieving: You’re waving a flag of defeat to the opppsition.

Agree. This country is also for all our daughters and we need to teach them to fight this war with all they have. This battle was lost but the war rages on.

This. We’re a liberal family in a liberal area, flying the American flag year round. They don’t own it.

I would, if I had enough money to get in anywhere else.
