Disappointed coming back to the U.S

My spouse is from the UK. I enjoy going there, but I would never say that the food there is better than here. Where do you live in the US that the food is bland? The US has, by far, much more variety in foods than the UK. Spouse's cousin moved here from the UK and is loving the food choices (and yes, gained way too much weight).

As far as sophistication goes, please. You posting this on here is just drivel and makes you look like a wannabe. You realize that the vast majority of Brits aren't sophisticated, right?

THIS. I'm so sick of Americans acting like the Brits are somehow more sophisticated. They are not. They have just as many trashy people as we do, they're just a smaller country.

But they have accents and a Queen!

And every Londoner shops at Harris’s and eats strawberries and cream courtside at Wimbledon.

Also, this reeks of a parody post. Sophistication and Dubai, too funny. Dubai is faux sophistication. It’s the South Beach of the Middle East, with some enslavement, no religious tolerance, and limited rights for women.

I can think of at least 100 reasons to be disappointed in the U.S., but having bland food compared to London is not one of them. Nor can I think of a single reason why I would prefer to live in Dubai. I'm not a "love it or leave it" person generally, but honestly I feel like if this is the way OP feels, they probably should leave it.

Same. Anyone who thinks differently hasn't really been anywhere. I've lived in over 10 countries and traveled to another 150 or so. The US is a great country and you couldn't pay me to be a citizen of any other country in the world.

Well I have done a lot above and agree to a certain point. American food is bland, hot dogs and burgers. I mean good you find in US that's not bland is prob another cuisine. Cesar salad is actually not all that v other ethnic cuisines. American food is not sophisticated sorry. Grilled cheese is as fancy as the cheese I suppose but cheese you get here is not that fancy lol

Depending on how much money you have, your comfort is directly tied into your ability to afford a nice house in a safe neighborhood. I'm a different poster and don't know if I agree totally with OP but it's complex when figuring out whether US is the best place to live for ALL. I'm gonna bet you an African American living in New Orleans 9th ward may not think life is awesome in the US v some other parts of the world. I mean, yeah most places in India would such comparatively but most places in Switzerland prob not.

If you live in a diverse city in the US you have great food choices. One thing I missed living abroad was being able to have my pick of nearby restaurants featuring delicious cuisine from around the world, including fusion. I love that we don't have to go far to get excellent Mexican, Guatemalan, Peruvian, Tex-Mex, Cuban, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, Mongolian, Ethiopian, West African, Spanish tapas, Italian, French, middle-European, or other types of cuisine.

And Lebanese and Greek!

I mean, I've lived abroad and local cuisine can be absolutely delicious. But most of the "ethnic" restaurants featuring food from different countries were really not that great unless it was some very expensive multi-star restaurant.

?

American seafood is awesome. I’m at the beach this weekend, and I’ve had fabulous crabs, crabcakes, soft shell crabs, scallops, etc. And fabulous locally grown vegetables.

You mentioned New Orleans—one of the best cities for American food.

We have chefs in our family, so the food is always fresh, fabulous and interesting.

New Orleans is a very French cuisine influenced city are you out of your mind? Of all the US curies it would be the one with the strongest traditional European influenced cuisine. Perhaps that's why you like it so much? PS means it's not American. That's OPs point is other countries have better food!

And my comment about is re: living in poorer cities which many times you will have in South - my point being is you live in poverty you may not be as comfortable and happy living in US. Statistically it's much harder to crawl out of hard poverty in the US. I think you need to reassess your ideas about food and how great the US is. Absolutely if you have a level of financial security you can enjoy great food and life here but the idea that Dubai would not be fun or living in UK may not present a better overall lifestyle potential to certain demographics of US citizens is not accurate.

Right! If another person says that hot dogs and hamburgers are all Americans have that’s American I’ll scream.

Sort of funny but I lived overseas. We invited a local couple to our house for dinner. They were shocked we had plates and silverware. They seriously thought Americans all ate like we do at McDonald’s with paper plates and our hands. True story!

Deep breath. Let me try to explain this to you.

America is still a relatively new country. Indians lived here before men from Europe and South America came here and eventually brought slaves with them. They created a new world that eventually would be called America—a melting pot unlike no other.

New Orleans has its own cuisine. Sure, it’s influenced by the early French colonizers, but it is also heavily influenced by African and Caribbean flavors. Cajun isn’t French.

Southern food is a delicacy.

What about barbecue? Ever tasted real bbq from the mountains of NC or TX?

I spent 20 years of my life in EU trying to immigrate here, and 20 years living here now. The “new love” has faded and now l am as annoyed with the US as l was with my country of birth. The more you live somewhere, the more you get to know its problems. At first everything is new and unknown and interesting…it’s just like dating vs being married.

Country-wise, l am ready for “an AP”…but we got kids so need to wait till they are off somewhere (EU or here, they can do either based on dual citizenship) 😆 …. And my job opportunities are still better in US than EU at this time.

Don’t confuse the feelings you get while visiting a place with how it would be like to actually live there.

Dubai is nothing but a huge environmental disaster, that doesn't mean, that the US ist much better, but of course not less "sophisticated".
