For all we know this kid just assaulted another student. If that were the case I really wouldn't feel bad for what happened to him.

um...no? Because a teacher slapped him we are assuming the kid is in the wrong? I am saying, my personal opinion, is that there is NEVER a time I will support an adult in a position of authority physically assaulting a child. I can see the child saying something back to the teacher, and the teacher responded by losing control. Again, not an acceptable response. I also see the other teacher coming out of a classroom to intercede, and it appears she asks him to walk away, and he also verbally responds to her negatively.

Also, none of what I wrote above makes any difference. An adult assaulted a child causing physical harm. I don't need to know any backstory.

I suppose you never support "children" being charged like adults when they commit heinous crimes either.

How the legal system operates and a teacher exacting his own punishment or two different things and if you don’t know that you are an idiot.

I have empathy for the teacher, empathy for the teen, but likely very little for the teen's parents/guardians.

Or maybe you are seeing kids suffering the mental health impacts of the pandemic. Please stop blaming parents for all ‘bad behavior.’

Nope. They were right the first time.

Not sure your point except to muddy the conversation. Person A assaulted person B. Person A needs to pay.

Yeah, this doesn’t seem defensible in any way. I’m sure he just snapped and I sure hope this is an isolated thing, but this is a one strike and you’re out sort of offense. It’s just never allowable.

Lol not DCUM doing the most to try to justify a teacher punching a student in the head

No, it's definitely parental failure. Almost anyone who works in a school will tell you this.

And how do those on the school know? Are they in these kids’ homes? As the parent of a special needs kid, I’ve seen teachers make plenty of incorrect assumptions.

Your claim was that it is always wrong for an adult to assault a child because they are a child. Not because it was a teacher deciding their own punishment.

Depending on the location corporal punishment may still be legal and including hitting the head.

The kid wore a hoodie and the teacher told him to leave the classroom and he did. Maybe on the way out he said ‘F off’ or ‘this is F-ing stupid’ - whatever he said or didn’t, the teacher chased after him and ASSAULTED HIM, more than once! He slapped him hard enough to bounce his head off the wall, then grabbed him by the arm and started dragging him.

I cannot believe any of you are defending the teacher, and I’m sickened that the school board voted to let him take early retirement. Probably the kid is poor, maybe he’s a minority to boot.

Thank goodness the local prosecutor isn’t a monster like those defending this teacher - he’s now facing felony battery charges and I hope he’s convicted and spends time in jail.

He waited a year too long to retire. IT IS NEVER OKAY TO ASSAULT A STUDENT! Even in states where (sickeningly) corporal punishment is legal, it is supposed to be meted out in a measured way, not an assault by an angry out of control adult. What the heck do you folks think children learn from being treated with violence by their parents, teachers, coaches?! THAT VIOLENCE IS OKAY!

Cannot believe this is even a subject of debate.

Hitting the head is not a legal form of corporal punishment in schools anywhere in the USA. I challenge you to present the evidence to prove my assertion wrong.

I read on Reddit that the kid is constant trouble and a little s**thead. Still agree with every word of the above.

Dumb a** I only said the last thing, not the prior quote.

Even if the kid did assault another student, the teacher has no right to slap and push the student. Seems like student is a prick, but he will get his payday from the school system for this since it is captured on video.
