I’m sure the kid will be in jail in just a few short years. Maybe even juvie sooner

With teachers like that oppressing and assaulting him, I’m sure he’s experiencing negative emotional effects. Add in the pandemic, and the possible poor parenting some posters are sure he experienced, and he has a tough row to hoe. What do you think should be done to help kids which rough starts? More physical violence to keep them in line, more social and educational supports to make up for what was lacking, something else? Or just make more jails and start locking them up earlier and longer since you think he (and presumably kids in similar situations) is a lost cause?

We all remember kids like that in school. We also all remember the crappy teacher on the cusp of retirement just phoning it in. No one would have stood up for them. I don't know why the teacher hit him, and I don't know whether the falling to the floor was the kid being overly dramatic and for attention, but I do know teachers have a hard mostly thankless job that I wouldn't want. We need to cut the otherwise good ones some slack, and start expecting better from kids.

This teacher has been breaking the rules for years, and finally crossed the line into physical violence. Why do we need to hold children to higher standards than adults?

For all we know this kid just assaulted another student. If that were the case I really wouldn't feel bad for what happened to him.

Even if he did, that doesn't give the teacher the right to assault the kid. You call the police and let the police deal with that.

This kid was slapped (with force) because he was wearing a hoodie on school grounds. There is something about hoodies that drive white men to violence (especially if said hoodie is being worn by a non-white person). This coward didn’t even bother to offer any medical attention to the student, simply walked away. To add insult to injury (no pun intended) he submitted his letter of resignation within two hours of battering the student, and the school board unanimously approved it three days later. I’m glad he was charged. Talk about white privilege. This could not have been a Black teacher slapping a white student. No way.

Bullshite. Adults don't do that. I'd check this teacher for signs of dementia or mental illness.

But then this is Indiana and Indiana is a shite hole.

You simply cannot do this to any kid - yours or anyone else’s.

No they didn't. Kids still acted up back then. My dad worked in the school system and I knew about more cases where the teachers abused the students. Don't even get me started on how kids who were different or had disabilities were treated. Romanticizing the past is for people who know nothing about history.

It sounds like this guy was a much beloved teacher who was going to retire at the end of this school year and now he’s jeopardized his retirement because he couldn’t control himself. I’m sure the kid had misbehaved, but whatever the kid did, chasing him down and physically assaulting him is not okay.

He was also the subject of a free speech suit. His classroom was adorned with pro life stuff and apparently believed the pizzagate type conspiracies. Glad he got his pension.

Yep, that is Indiana. This is exactly what you can expect there.

You can tell from the way he hit the kid with no hesitation that he has done this before. I hope he fries.

You are vile and disgusting. Do you have kids?

You are so full of garbage. In the school system my kid attends a much beloved teacher was found to have a background which should have precluded him from ever having a teaching position. He had sexual relationships with minors in the past. The majority of kids support him to this day. He is a master manipulator and during the years my kid attended the teacher was still openly mooning over several attractive young students

Popularity should never factor in to deciding discipline for a teacher. Often the most abusive are masters at manipulation.

I'm sure plenty of parents in Indiana loved this trash heap of a teacher and supported him. The ease with which this guy did this makes it clear he has been violent before. Hope he enjoys his jail cell.

Indiana allows corporal punishment and provides immunity to teachers who use it. They are allowed to “take any action that is reasonably necessary to carry out or to prevent an interference with an educational function that the person supervises.”

Your kids must have behavioral issues.

Has it been confirmed that the student in this situation was a non-white student?

If you watch the video there is no way one could argue it was reasonably necessary for a 280 pound adult to hit a child probably less than a third of his size.

You're taking it to the extreme. Of course kids still acted up, but we had a lot less school shootings and other violent behavior.
