Help me get past my hangup with the Subaru image!

My straight FIL just bought one. WTF, OP?

Wtf, op. Your stereotypes are bizarre. If anything the only stereotype about Subaru owners is they’re smart and sensible. My FIL used to run a dealership and he said all kinds of people bought subarus. The common thread was they tended to be financially responsible, they would either pay cash or have good credit and get the lowest interest.

That is fascinating. I bought my last one cash. I think it's because they are not showy.

Can attest,

+1 My 82 year-old ILs bought one last year and love it. So does my mother (who drives a Honda but wants a Subaru just like the other older lady in her hiking club). Great vehicles for everyone!

An inclusive company all about love and builds many of its cars in the U.S.? Sign me up!!!

(Okay I've been signed up for a while, I'm from the mountains, that's what my people drive)

I had never heard the stereotypes until someone I knew on a date and the guy drove a Subaru. He rejected her and to insult him, she told me that everyone knows that Subarus are lesbian cars. I imagined this as a clown car. Instead of clowns, I imagined a car pulling up, and a bunch of cheerful women with sensible haircuts waving out the windows.

Also, did you seriously say "not that there's anything wrong with that"?? WTF????

As a subara owner, female, middle aged, hetero, originally from CA, I did not know Subaru had this image.

You see lots of Subarus up in Tahoe.

My nieces have them - under 30, hetero.

My neighbors, straight, married - have them, too. I see men driving them, too.

Not sure what the hang up is,either. Shrug.

We paid cash for our Subaru at Fitzgerald in Rockville. When we were dealing with the accounts payable/finance guy to pay for the car, he told us half the Subarus they sell are to cash buyers.

That's pretty insane. I think its because - as you said - they are not showy and you get a sh#t-ton of tech and features for a Subaru that cost extra in Toyotas, Lexus, etc.

I don't know why folks are piling on OP. It's definitely a known stereotype of Subarus that it's a lesbian car. It's just in jest, not a hate crime. Subaru is definitely a little cooler and more mainstream now than say, 15-20 years ago so maybe newer owners (or younger owners) aren't aware?

I wish I could find the meme my friend sent when DH and I bought our Forester in 2012, it was a fake ad that said something like "Congrats to you and your partner on your new Subaru." We're straight. We got a chuckle.

I'm the person whose FIL used to manage dealerships and he worked for a couple automakers...he said Subaru had the most cash buyers and also the most loyal customers.

It’s just a super outdated stereotype and doesn’t ring true anymore so it’s silly to have this hangup for no reason. It was kind of funny 10 years ago; we called my college friend’s old Legacy Outback the Lesbaru. Now I kind of cringe to think about it. Subarus like the outback, forester, and ascent are now ubiquitous among straight middle aged and elderly people.

Man, I just realized there are sooooo many urban hipster lesbians at my kid’s Catholic school

Subarus are super popular with the Millennial Instagram set that are into the outdoors lifestyle - rock climbing, camping, hiking, snow sports, etc.

We've had our Subaru Ascent for 2.5 years and its a fantastic family car. Based on our research it was the best 3rd row SUV. Best leg room. Most comfortable 3rd row. Best Safety features. Best price/value. I think it appeals to people who buy cars that offer the best value/features/comfort.

OP, you seem to be grappling with a very old stereotype. You may want to grow up a bit.
