This is an interesting thread We Americans really are so spoiled/lucky. Up until the pandemic-- stores were plentiful with items. Now, every time my dh or I go to the story something is unavailable. Recent examples- tomatoes, dinner roll packs, taco sauce, etc. We live in DC + shop mostly at Social Safeway + Foggy Bottom TJs.

I think these are seasonal. They’re probably starting to switch over to spring items now.

I also tried making my own refried beans for the first time last week and they were so delicious. A huge bag of dried pinto beans was $7.

I started making my own beans in the instant pot about six months ago because canned beans are really, really hard to find. And it's so easy to make yourself.

PP who was struggling to find the canned beans - that sounds nice! Unfortunately I don't have an instant pot or pressure cooker. The last two recipes I tried using dried beans just didn't turn out well, no matter how long I cooked them they still came out too hard. I vowed to go back to canned beans, but was surprised when they've been hard to find!!

I believe with red beans if you add salt before they are done cooking they stay hard. Google the issue and consider trying again. They are easy to make and so much better than canned.

Stores stopped carrying whole cut up chickens years ago much to my dismay. I'm having a hard time finding skin on, bone in chicken breasts and chicken thighs. I can't make great tasting stock without the bone in chicken breasts.

Add a dash of baking soda. I never overnight soak. Beans will cook in 2-3 hours

I got them at Wegmans but lord that seems like a wasteful way to make stock! Just use wings!

Meanwhile you can't find lactose free dairy products anymore because everyone is drinking this vile stuff

Wait please come to my Safeway! I struggle to find real milk because almost everything on the shelves is lactose free!

Where are you shopping??!? I see cut-up chickens all the time. I frequently buy bone-in/skin-on chicken thighs, but I have seen breasts as well. I’ve also seen whole cut-up chicken.
