Part of the real challenge is that many of these students lost 2 years due to the pandemic. They lost the opportunity to figure out what they like and don't like - to create relationships with teachers and counselors who can support them and advise them - to test out activities and dive deep into something they didn't even know was a thing.
Take all this away and you have many students who have a very surface perspective on careers, colleges and themselves. |
That's so true. My junior has no idea about where he wants to apply or what he wants to study. This, compared to his older sister, who knew exactly what she was looking for out of her college experience. |
Location is one factor. Kids these days prefer schools in the cities. It's right in the middle of Boston but also has a nice campus unlike some of its peers such as Boston University or NYU which are also gaining popularity. Coop program which leads to great job placement. NEU ranks pretty high on all kinds of job placement and salary rankings. It has a good balance of all the right ingredients. |
LOL! You learned your script well. |
What it doesn't have (for a school its size) is much in the way of sports or Greek life...this also might turn off some kids (but, again, may be a plus for some)... |
I am not necessarily hot on Northeastern, but this “script” makes sense. Families are wary of majors in basket-weaving and the coop program creates opportunities to graduate with valuable work experience. And you can’t beat Boston/Cambridge as a college student, especially when so many kids now want schools in/adjacent to cities rather than rural LACs. |
| It's an incredibly overrated school, and it's impressive that so many kids are falling for it hook, line and sinker. I have to give it to NEU's marketing department, though. They deserve a fat raise. |
For those reasons, the script says it reached a milestone a little while ago that if you have two choices between Northeastern vs Boston University, more students choose Northeastern now. https://www.parchment.com/c/college/tools/college-cross-admit-comparison.php?compare=Northeastern+University&with=Boston+University |
What makes you think that? It's not just one or two factors like COOP or prime location with campus. Obviously It's also a Tier I research University. So for an example, the College of Computer Sciences was established which is it's own College, and It's ranked #12 in CSRaniking. https://csrankings.org/ This is based on meaningful research activities. Overall there are plenty of research opportunities as well in many fields. BTW, CS is by far the hottest field these days, and it's investing a lot in the area. Most of all, the industry and employers don't agree with your imagination. After all they are the ones who would make the most objective evaluation rate on the value of the education and the graduates. Usually ranked pretty high in these areas. https://www.gradreports.com/best-colleges https://www.collegetransitions.com/dataverse/top-feeders-tech https://www.collegetransitions.com/dataverse/top-feeders-banking Still needs some improvement, but it's doing pretty well on the endowment side as well. https://www.gwhatchet.com/2020/03/09/gw-falls-behind-majority-of-peers-in-endowment-growth-last-fiscal-year/ The university is just overall going in the right direction very fast. . I think it's actually underrated. |
This isn't entirely true. If you don't have an ED option, then it really feels like a crap shoot, and you have no idea where you might get in. Eight feels risky when everything feels like a reach. You pick one or two safeties you can live with, apply to them early then the rest is like buying lottery tickets to get in to at least one school you'd be proud to attend. NEU was a clear match for most of these kids who got deferred, so that sends the message that everything is a reach except for the clearest safety. So they add more schools hoping to get in somewhere. |
Many kids still haven't had a chance to visit many schools themselves, so that makes sense. |
The NU troll is at it again...appears everytime Northeastern comes up. Wait for it...the words "scam" and "racketeering" are coming soon... |
+1 It wasn't right for my DD but I was pretty impressed on the tour. It has a very specific approach to education and they seem to do it very well. If your kid wants an urban location, doesn't care about a big party scene/greek life, and knows what field they want to go into (and they have very good grades/stats), it should be on your list. |
