6th Grade Math Options

Talk to the Middle School. Bring MAP Scores. See if they have a placement test.

If you have a 4th grader now, you should advocate for them to do pre-algebra (AIM) next year, which will set them up for Algebra in 6th. Don't wait another year, start now.

Oh wow, I had no idea this would be an option, our principal has been less than helpful when we've asked about options beyond compacted math. How could a 5th grader take AIM though? Would he have to be bussed over to a middle school for one period or something?

Yes, 1st period at the MS. Usually, Middle Schools are more flexible than ESes on this sort of thing because they don’t have the same “once word gets out everyone will want to do it” mentality.

I know a 4th grader who was moved into math 5/6. Push for this now.

NP and I just really love that this thread is full of support for OP advocating for her kid instead of doubting and undermining her.

Why? The kid has to take math every year so what math classes would they take in grades 7-12 if they did Algebra in 6th grade? That Algebra grade will get factored into HS GPA. Do you really want to put all that pressure on your kid the first year they are in Middle School?

I have a 5th grader going to 6th next year in the DCC. All 3 middle schools in the DCC only offer Math 6+ and AIM in 6th grade. So no child has the option to just do 6th grade math in 6th grade. There are other classes for ELL students but I don’t know what grade levels those curriculums cover.

(There are 9 middle schools in the DCC.) SSIMS had this in their parent articulation meeting slides:

Course Options for 6th Grade
Learn Zillion Math 6
Learn Zillion AMP 6+ (Accelerated Math 6 Plus)
Learn Zillion Math 7
Applied Investigation in Math 6 (AIM)

When do we find out the recommended class for our current 5th graders?

They may be in ParentVue on the Course Request page.

Small correction: The grade will show on the transcript as a course taken in 6th Grade, but the grade will not be included in GPA, just displayed, unless the student opts into counting MS grades.

It depends on the teacher...some haven't entered their recommendations yet.

I'm the PP who advocated AIM next year and I'm just taking PP at her word that her kid is that advanced. I also know from expereince, though, that MCPS won't allow this if the child hasn't already mastered the material. so I figure "give the advice and let the school figure out the gatekeeping."
