Voting out politicians who support school closures

Schools should close when a huge Covid wave crashs into our region, yes, that's a no-brainer. Same for businesses. It's to keep our hospitals from saturating, so it's worth it. We can haggle over details, but in the main, that's my feeling. I have 2 kids in public, 1 with special needs, but their needs aren't more important than keeping open beds in hospital.

This.

Every major medical association in the United States said schools should have stayed open because the benefits outweighed the risks. They said it was safe for schools to be open even before any vaccines were available. We ignored all the science and the best advice of experts and surrendered to demagoguery. Every doctor I know thinks it was ridiculous to close schools.

here is the problem - those who get angry about school closures won't support the strategies that we need to keep them open

Mask Mandates, vaccine mandates, social distancing, etc.

My priority local issue is probably rising crime. My child is finished with DCPS, but I think there are serious arguments both for and against keeping schools open. No easy answers and I would lose a lot of respect for any local politician who pretended there was an obvious and simple right answer.

If you truly think this, you are going to be shocked at the results of upcoming elections.

Voters who are deep blue, vaccinated, boosted, not eating indoors, etc. are also very angry about school closings. You want to believe it's just Trump supporters. You could not be more wrong.

Come back to earth, sweetie. This is D.C. Everyone is vaxxed. Everyone wears masks. Everyone practices social distancing. And EVERYONE is pissed off about schools.

Oh, and nobody "supports" school closings.

How is pp self-centered?

I don't have kids in DCPS, my youngest graduated from HS last spring (and was in private anyway, so school was open in hybrid form all of last year).

School closing is not the ONLY issue I care about as a DC voter, but it is still *A* issue I care about. Because I'm not self-centered and recognize the enormous negative impact of school shutdowns on children. Believe it or not, it is possible to care about issues even if they do not directly impact you. Just like how I'm past my child bearing years, but I still care about abortion access. I'm not gay, but I still care about marriage equality and equal rights protection for those who are. Shocking, I know.

(Actually, it does kinda impact me. On a societal level, we ALL feel the impacts of kids being kept out of school. An uneducated society is not a promising one.)

You are wrong on all counts.

At least in DC, this is patently false.

That wasn’t the case in fall 2020.

Good Christ, there’s a cohort of upper SES white Twitter moms that have a petition going to close DC schools. Of course there are people supporting school closings in DC.

Angry? Yes.
Dumb enough to listen to GOP propaganda? No.
