If you get your own food/drinks at table service, no you don't get a tip. Find a new job. |

I’m sure this will ruffle some feathers here but in America, yes, servers are entitled to a tip! It’s what they live on and how they make their money. It’s expected by the server, expected by the customer, and everyone around the age of maybe 12 and up knows it. So please get off your high horse with this ridiculous notion that SERVERS aren’t entitled to tips! Yes, they are. The service they are providing you costs them their time and physical and mental energy. They aren’t your personal slave and we all know this is isn’t Europe where they’re paid a full wage. You know the rules of the game but one night out at Chilli’s and you think your King Sh*t and have the authority to look down your nose at people. If you have crappy service then certainly leave a LOWER tip and let management know if you’re so inclined.

I mean, if you go to any restaurant in an area and they know you're not one to tip while using their service thinking it's perpetually "free," they will remember you and have the right to deny you access to their services. You might be able to get away with take away but you won't be getting a table again. I wouldn't know how you go around the country without any remorse after hitting restaurants and never paying a single tip. The restaurant industry has long dealt with these kind of customers. Especially smaller restaurants or chains won't have enough money leftover to pay servers without functioning properly because believe it or not, most restaurants have produce small margins after having hired every absolutely essential employee to keep it running at optimal speed. Perhaps one day we will seek to change the paying system with restaurants, because restaurant cash flow works the way it does now. My family member owned a restaurant, and having looked at their financial statements, it takes strategy to get your restaurant running properly and you still end up making disappointing profits at times. Try to think that selling food items can be a very volatile venture. |
Huh? Most restaurants I know are going to give you a dirty look for bringing your own food in and using a table that would've gone to paying customers. |
I agree with this. I noticed the "ladies over 40" comment, and I'm going to (sort of) let it slide. This 43 year old ex bartender paid for college by bartending. So I tend to tip around 25% on the regular, and actually tell the server when they aren't doing a great job, in a not-yelly way. (For example, I did this at Balthazar in NYC quietly to the server...."you know, you all really half-assed it this time. I love it here, but this wasn't your best." Server: yeah, you aren't wrong. We can do better...manager shows up with free champagne). But I kept my tip exactly the same, bc servers and bartenders on average make $3/hour. The system isn't my fault, but I'm definitely going to do my best to support these hard-working folks. Also, if you can't afford to tip, don't go out. |
+1 I don't blame teens for not knowing how to tip though when I get them in my section. They're just kids who are practically broke, buying what they can and having barely anything leftover for tip. and looking for a decent meal and good times with their friends, so I let them slide. Unless they can't behave themselves. |
| 30’s families, 20s and 30’s couples tip the best. Most older women do not tip well. Most but not all older men do. The after church crowd is both notoriously needy, rude, and poor at tipping and that generalization is 100% true. |
I despise servers like you who give me horrible service because I'm over 40. The service is even worse if I'm with my teen kids. I'm a generous tipper but give me bad service and you might get $1. |
Morning workers aren't going to be willing to wake up at 6 to come in and expect tips once in a blue moon if they knew if was the case, let alone apply first to a job like this if they have mouths to feed |
Why do you think you’re entitled to (give or take) an hour of someone’s time for $1? |
No, I serve everyone with smiles and friendliness from start to end. Most of customers are families with parents(over 40) and their teens, they tip well and treat me politely as well. It's just I notice sometimes that there are customers over 40 that act 'uncannily' nice(almost to a level of extreme fakeness) that tip me badly. It just seems to be that demographic that I encounter in that situation at times. |
I agree. |

OP, listen to me carefully: thank you.
I slept in my car off and on while I waitressed and bartended my way through college. I know about the burns and the jabbed fingers, sore feet, the crick in your neck that just gets worse as the night goes on. The absolute weirdness of a disproportionate reaction. The utter and complete tiredness. Thanks. Hope I get you serving my table. I'll say thank you then, too, and not just in words. |
+1 You can't really curb tipping at restaurants in America with servers, with millions of sitdown restaurants already operating like this and unlikely to change in your lifetime. |
