Just because you are a "software engineer" does not mean you are qualified for jobs with this comp.

That’s not a concern, of course I’ll need to be qualified. Plus it’s just 50k above what I make now. I only want to know where to look.

You shouldn't be looking if you're in DC. You are overpaid right now relative to the DC market and you aren't going to find much better.

I am the software Manager and I don't make that but I am non-profit, however, I have interviewed a lot of candidates from different industries, and some of them even come from Amazon. Your range will be 160k-180K and I am being generous. My sr software engineers make $140k. add 20K in you go to private

You are looking in the wrong area.

And how's your turnover rate? DHs firm has hard time retaining qualified Sr SE in 160-180k range currently.

Again I was being super generous. I am non profit and people love working here so almost no turnover. I interviewed some candidates for sr software engineering position recently and their asking was $130k and some were coming from private sector. $160-180k are for the highest payer in the area: google, Amazon, cap one etc. Realistically $140k is great pay depending on benefits.

Pp here. Sorry I misread anyway the info is still correct, no high turnover at my company, we have a great cause and people love working here but I have been worried about people leaving because it seems like people are wanting more money.

That is crazy, GS scale employees make that much with a lot more stability and a more fulfilling mission.

Take a look at https://www.levels.fyi
They show DC area folks as well.
People do not make salaries over 300k, but total compensation can be way above that with the stock.
All the big tech names are where you should be looking.

Even with the big government contractors you will top out around 200k for salary. For total compensation, it can go higher depending on what their 401k match is and how much overtime you can charge.

From some of the other commenters, it sounds like they are talking about salary only. Sr software engineer has a wide range. 140k is on the low end of the range.
Even if you look at the West Coast jobs, the salaries are generally not over 200k. People are making the big money from stocks and bonuses.

Those packages are crazy for the area, I wonder why this OP is not getting those types of offers.

I know a lot of people at NASA, NRL, APL, and NSA which work on very cool things and have exciting missions that have real impact. It’s not like all gov IT is setting up ServiceNow instances for the SSA.
