You shouldn't be looking if you're in DC. You are overpaid right now relative to the DC market and you aren't going to find much better.

How much does a SE make in DC? $200k?

I am the software Manager and I don't make that but I am non-profit, however, I have interviewed a lot of candidates from different industries, and some of them even come from Amazon. Your range will be 160k-180K and I am being generous. My sr software engineers make $140k. add 20K in you go to private

And how's your turnover rate? DHs firm has hard time retaining qualified Sr SE in 160-180k range currently.

Again I was being super generous. I am non profit and people love working here so almost no turnover. I interviewed some candidates for sr software engineering position recently and their asking was $130k and some were coming from private sector. $160-180k are for the highest payer in the area: google, Amazon, cap one etc. Realistically $140k is great pay depending on benefits.

That is crazy, GS scale employees make that much with a lot more stability and a more fulfilling mission.

Fulfilling is very relative…

I know a lot of people at NASA, NRL, APL, and NSA which work on very cool things and have exciting missions that have real impact. It’s not like all gov IT is setting up ServiceNow instances for the SSA.

That is exactly my point, you think federal jobs are fulfilling and I don’t care about federal job and my job is very fulfilling.

This is accurate. My friend is in a middle mgmt at Cap One and is trying to get my college junior to apply to an entry level rotational program. They will train high aptitude kids to do technical work, because they can’t pay CS majors enough.
She says they are crazy competitive now. earlier this year, in the middle of a pandemic, they gave their SWE a 15% raise in hopes that they wouldn’t accept headhunter calls from Amazon. Even their HR folks are being poached by other companies who are trying to ramp up their hiring.

300k/L6 is normal if he’s been there a while or got promoted from a lower level. Amazon increased pay across the board in the past year but only new hires are getting it. He should probably go elsewhere if he doesn’t want to be underpaid and overworked at Amazon. I know someone who quit as an L5 making 200k and a month later Amazon came back offering her 300k without needing to interview again

Also this was a 300k/L5 SDE position.

My wife got 2 FAANG offers in DC last year. She is SDE2 (3 yoe) and both offers came in with TC at $300k

I would definitely not be able to become a developer or a software engineer. In my opinion, these are very complex professions, and it is better to turn to specialists than to try to figure it out on your own.

I also believe that everyone should mind their own business, and if you need to develop an app or software, then it is better to contact a good developer and continue to mind your own business.
