Official Abortion Thread

Life and death is never black and white, that’s all. There are a million little stories we don’t know. Most people don’t use abortion as a form of birth control.

Medical reasons for abortion form a small percentage of abortions. See page 113, table 2:

Is an abortion moral?

Every attempt should be made to save the life of both. However, if that is deemed impossible, abortion would be a moral, but tragic, solution. However, this is a pretty rare situation.

You know nothing about women’s health and should really excuse yourself from any discussion of this topic. Ectopic pregnancies are NOT “pretty rare.” One in every fifty pregnancies in the U.S. is ectopic. There is no way to “save the life of both.” Despite stupid Republican legislators thinking that it is. Some Catholic hospitals wait until the affected Fallopian tube ruptures before they deem the abortion necessary, endangering both the woman and her future fertility.

I guess it is OK to terminate old people now, with Coronavirus, but not fetus.

I am repeating what Planned Parenthood says...that they are rare. Maybe you should excuse yourself.

https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/pregnancy/ectopic-pregnancy

My comment was a general comment...in any instance of a troubled pregnancy, every attempt should be made to save the life of both. Obviously, for ectopic pregnancies, that is not possible....hence, the use of my term "impossible".

Really. I agree it's not rare. I've known two women who have lost Fallopian tubes from it. This makes me remember in third grade a class mate confiding in me how her mother almost died and I fully understood it. I think as a Catholic she was supposed to just die though. Amazing these dumb right to lifers don't know there is still no way to save those pregnancies. Didn't some politician famously say something stupid in that vein a couple of years ago? I figured this thread got bumped due to the upcoming documentary about Roe. She was quite the hypocrite in later years. I've lived in the same neighborhood for many years. It's amazing how many of the women from our baby play groups had to have in vitro yet are "pro life." They clearly have forgotten that other embryos got thrown out.

GOP members of the Ohio State Legislature put it in the law that doctors need to transfer ectopic pregnancies from the Fallopian tube to the uterus or face murder charges. Really.

Why am I not surprised by this

Paid by the same people who are now pushing to reopen and will kill thousands.

We’ll leave your uterus alone if you leave our unborn children alone. Selfish woman. It’s not about YOU. We know, it’s hard to comprehend that it’s not about you or being anti-female, but that is why this argument will never be reconciled, because the two sides are arguing different points. If you’re not prepared to have a kid then don’t have unprotected sex. Men or women. And please don’t bring out the rape and defective fetus arguments and somehow equate those to most abortions. Just stop being disingenuous. Now, you probably think I am anti-abortion. You’d be wrong. It is simple. Abortion prior to the 24th week should be legal as the fetus has not developed sufficiently to live on its own. After that it should be illegal. Most states have this law. It is not about women’s rights or BS religion, it is about science. Clearly it is also the woman’s choice prior to the 24th week as the entity is still part of the woman until that time. Now let’s stop arguing and base it all on that nexus point in each pregnancy and move on. God, Allah, and whomever else have nothing to do with this as this is a legal government decision, not a religious decision and there is separation of church and state in this country, at least there’s supposed to be. The Bible says thou shall not kill, yet states do it all the time: it’s called capital punishment. The nation does it: it’s called war. So if we can separate our religious beliefs in those cases, surely it can be done in this case.

look, I'm sorry you don't like these reasons. I get it.

BUT, then help us to reduce the need by providing free birth control (including LARCS), comprehensive sex education (not abstinence only propaganda), affordable and accessible health care, assistance to low income mothers and children and affordable and accessible child care.

If you aren't willing to do these things, the need for abortion will remain.

The biggest need us for cultural changes to make people avail themselves if all these free services and then use them. If you want abortions to be rare, you have to make people take responsibility for their reproduction. I am an L and D nurse and many of the women I see claimed to have an IUD, always took their pills, had a failed implant, or the classic broken condom. Statistically, these could not have occurred with the frequency I see them and their babies suffer for it.

Holy shit, have you ever heard of the term "sampling bias"?

You're a labor and delivery nurse. Of course you see all the exceptions and birth control failures! No sh#t, Sherlock.

Of course I understand sampling bias. I also understand the difference between anecdotal information and rigorous research. Do you?

Failure rate of various methods of birth control:
Rhythm Method: 23% to 2%
Spermacide: 21%
Female Condoms: 21%
Diaphragm: 17%
The Sponge: 14%
Male Condoms: 13%
Contraceptive ring: 7%
The Patch: 7%
The Pill: 7%
Hormonal shot: 4%
Copper IUD: 0.8%
Female sterlization: 0.5%
LNG IUD: 0.1-0.4%
Vasectomy: 0.15%
Hormonal implant: 0.1%

https://www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/contraception/index.htm

As we can clearly see, condoms have a pretty darn high failure rate. It's sort of disgusting that you express so much apathy and distrust of your patients. People like you encourage patients to be dishonest, lest they be judged by a terrible nurse or doctor with a god complex.

+1000, I feel so sorry for your patients.

Bullshit. The right loses its mind every time you try to teach kids about birth control or make birth control more easily available. These are the same assholes who oppose the HPV vaccine even though it prevents cervical cancer because getting the vaccine encourages promiscuity.

We don't want it for our kids. You can do whatever you want. As long as you are sterilized.

Even sterilization has failure rates.

Ummm, no it wouldn't, because both partners would get sterilized.

So both your college age daughter and the boyfriend she is having sex with would both get sterilized, is that what you mean?

Vasectomies would help reduce unwanted pregnancies.

So would free and easily-available LARCS.

Again seriously, who is still debating this in good faith with goopers? They’re 100% on board with the GOP having killed almost 100,000 Americans and they’re 100% on board with opening up no matter who gets killed, like spraying a crowd with billets.

This conversation is over; the GOP is without argument.
