2021 VA Governors race

Over the years I have voted for democrats and republicans. I want no part of a Republican party that is the party of Trump. i think he has caused great harm to our country, definitely let the pandemic get out of control, allowed racists to be normalized, etc. BUT- the democrats party line closed schools had a HUGE impact on my family. Yes, I acknowledge that Northam signed s.1303 requiring school boards to offer in person education, and that schools are in person right now . BUT fairfax county is insisting on 14 day quarantines with no ability to test out. I am vaccinated, I mask, etc. But in this area we appear to be attempting covid 0 and there is no rational sense associated with it. The 14 day quarantines with no ability to test out put covid virus avoidance above all else. There is no cost benefit going on here. Honestly- I'm at the point that I think we should completely stop quarantining 'contacts'. Yes- keep sick kids home- but everyone has the ability to be vaccinated. There is no reason to keep 'contacts' out of school. There is no reason to keep a child who had an extremely mild case of covid, once that child is symptom free for 24 hours out of school for another arbitrary 8-10 days. So unfortunately I feel myself forced to vote for Youngkin.

You're voting for Youngkin...because of FCPS's quarantine policy? That doesn't make any sense.

And not everyone is vaccinated yet BTW. 5-11 will be soon but we aren't there yet.

FWIW, if you're vaccinated, APS has a different criteria for "close" contact as well as much shorter quarantines. Maybe you should push FCPS to change the quarantine policy instead of voting for a Trumphumper.

Oh believe me- we are pushing fcps. But they say they are following vdh's 'best practices' guidelines. We need the messaging from the top to be 'kids need to be in school' no ifs ands or buts. Not 'no matter the cost- 0 covid'- which is the message we are getting from VDH, and FCHD. Thus I vote for Youngkin- will you join me?

Fck no.

I'd be up for "test to stay" but you don't need a Trumphumper to make that happen.

unfortunately I think we do need a R to get 'test to stay'. the VDH under Northam is not willing to consider it. McCaullife has certainly not made any statements to suggest that he would support it. I would love to be wrong- but nothing is more important to me than ensuring kids stay in school- and 14 day 'quarantines' of healthy kids does not accomplish that.
FWIW-cursing at me and telling me I don't make sense is not really a great way to get me to change my mind- but you do you.

I'd like my school to be able to require masking and mandate staff vaccines, that means no to the Trumper

Absolutely not. Health is far, far more important than school absences. And that is speaking as a parent that has held his kid out of school the last two days for a simple cold.

APS is already looking at "test to stay". MCPS (very liberal) is already trying to make it happen. The biggest obstacle for that right now is obviously the national shortage of tests/test supplies. It's not a D v. R thing.

There is no need to bring in the GOP nutters to make that happen. Again, it just doesn't make any sense.

I'm not trying to "convince" anyone. I'm just calling out the facts. You are an adult and fully responsible for your actions. If you want to support a Trumpy politician for no rational reason, that is on you.

Don't confuse parents' concerns with paid GOP operatives. While real parents may agree with their demands, know that the entire CRT, anti-mask in schools argument is astroterf.

Same boat as PP except that I’ve never voted for a Republican. Virginia dems abandoned kids last year and are still pushing ridiculous COVID measures. I don’t want my kids masking all year even after they’ve been vaccinated. The nonsense has to stop so I’m voting for youngkin even though I disagree with him on almost everything. I’m waiting until Election Day. If mcaullife or northam say or lift the mask mandate in school after vaccine available for kids 5-11 I may change my mind.

I'm still voting D - but if Youngkin wins for the reasons you say here - I think the Ds will have no one to blame but themselves.

I don't agree with everything here - but this guy has some fair points.

I hear your frustration but not all kids can get vaccinated. My immunocompromised kid wants to keep going to school in person. What part of GLOBAL PANDEMIC do you not get?

I have concerns about what either Republicans or Democrats would do in full control of state government. The last few years of Democratic control have not been good.

Personally, I will vote for Youngkin (R), abstain from voting for Lt. Governor (both are unqualified lightweights), vote for Herring (D) for Attorney General, and vote for my incumbent member of the House of Delegates (D).

McAuliffe has always struck me as extremely sleazy and the fact that his election would guarantee more limousine liberal pandering to the far-left is a deal-killer for me.

If he wins and the Democrats continue to push Virginia to the far left, and tolerate the further rejection of merit and dumbing down of public schools, we will move to a more moderate state.
