Kinda hard to find someone to make a deal with after you’ve told the entire world these countries are kissing your ass to make a deal. |
The trade war with China will begin to hit in earnest in May. The ports are beginning to back up, layoffs at places like Deere and Boeing have started and the truckers don't realize how quickly the container shipping is drying up.
I am particularly proud of the Teamsters, whose union and members (who drive trucks, operate ports etc) came out in force for Trump. Oh well. |
Totally bonkers. Trump is total idiot and everyone around him is manipulating him.
“Navarro isn’t one to back down during policy debates and had stridently urged Trump to keep tariffs in place, even as corporate chieftains and other advisers urged him to relent. And Navarro had been regularly around the Oval Office since Trump’s “Liberation Day” event. So that morning, when Navarro was scheduled to meet with economic adviser Kevin Hassett in a different part of the White House, Bessent and Lutnick made their move, according to multiple people familiar with the intervention. They rushed to the Oval Office to see Trump and propose a pause on some of the tariffs—without Navarro there to argue or push back. They knew they had a tight window. The meeting with Bessent and Lutnick wasn’t on Trump’s schedule. The two men convinced Trump of the strategy to pause some of the tariffs and to announce it immediately to calm the markets. They stayed until Trump tapped out a Truth Social post, which surprised Navarro, according to one of the people familiar with the episode.” https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/trump-tariff-pause-navarro-bessent-lutnick-b9e864fb |
So this wasn’t 19 dimensional chess? |
God, this is so pathetic. |
Trump tariffs cause layoffs at Mack Truck
https://www.pennlive.com/business/2025/04/hundreds-of-workers-to-be-laid-off-over-the-next-90-days-at-pa-plant.html Great job creating more manufacturing jobs! |
FYI this blog post explaining why tariffs won't bring manufacturing back to the US written by a manufacturing entrepreneur. https://www.molsonhart.com/blog/america-underestimates-the-difficulty-of-bringing-manufacturing-back Some of the ones that stuck in my head: Even with high tariffs, it's still cheaper to make stuff overseas. The supply chain for industrial materials doesn't exist here anymore. So couldn't make most things even if wanted to. Americans don't want to do manufacturing jobs, aren't even healthy enough to endure them, and would need to move rural where the factory is. No one wants to build a factory in the US now because the rules (including tariffs) that will determine their profit/costs can change in a single tweet. |
Here's an idea from a poster on hackernews that points out something Trump could do to onshore manufacturing. HEY DOGE, here's an idea for you.
"If American companies want to sell in China, they must incorporate there, register capital, and name a person to be a legal representative. To sell in Europe, we must register for their tax system and nominate a legal representative. For Europeans and Chinese to sell in the United States, none of this is needed, nor do federal taxes need to be paid. This is .. not a bad idea, really. It would probably be annoying for small EU and UK exporters but less so than 10% tariffs and even less so than random day of the week tariffs. Maybe one day it could harmonise with the EU VAT system or something." |
Leheigh County is pretty red. They voted for this do they not. |
the way to do it was what the CHIPs and Science Act laid out and funded. Under Biden, investment in manufacturing was coming back. Trump has killed it, and now he has alienated our closest trading partners and every market is seeking alternatives like China getting soy from Brazil now. Those new trading agreements won't just be broken because a democrat is back in office. It will take years/decades to undo the damage being done. |
China steals businesses all the time. When I lived there, they would tell you in the expat newspaper what places to avoid because it was now in the hands of the Chinese rep pending litigation. I knew a lot of people there who had businesses, but you have to ready to lose it all. |
And the way to neutralize China's trading power was to form a trans pacific partnership with all China's trading partners except China, but Trump killed that in his first term. Main problem is that Trump cares more about his own ego than the good of the nation. |
Don’t know about china, but this is not true in EU. I’ve done this with my company so I know how it works. If you are just an importer, you don’t need a VAT registration or a corporate presence in EU. You only need that if you are selling there. That’s the same as in the US. And since this poster got it wrong on the EU, she probably did for China too. |
Hope the wall street and crypto bros are loving this. |
