Trump tariffs: ruin U.S. economy until 2040

"... despite Trump’s “America first” rhetoric, these policies would harm the US economy more than any other in the world, particularly trade-exposed sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture."

The European Union voted on Friday to pave the way for tariffs of up to 35.3% on electric vehicles imported from China, a move that might set the stage for a protracted trade war with the Asian giant.

The vote comes after a year-long anti-subsidy investigation by the European Commission, which proposed the tariffs to counter what it sees as unfair Chinese subsidies.

This is the best MAGA can do?

That’s not remotely responsive.

How will Trump’s across the board tariffs (10% on ALL imported goods and 60% on all imported goods with a China nexus) be good for the u.s. economy?

Remember most of what Americans buy today from Walmart, Target, Amazon is produced in China.

Interesting paper here that runs the numbers.

It’s not good.

Be interested for a Trump voter to provide detail on how the Trump policy will improve our economy.

“We find that these steps would result in lower US national income, lower employment, and higher inflation than otherwise. In some cases, economic conditions recover over time, but in others the damage continues through 2040.

And despite Trump’s “America first” rhetoric, these policies would harm the US economy more than any other in the world, particularly trade-exposed sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture. In some cases, other countries would enjoy stronger economic growth than otherwise after receiving inflows of capital leaving the United States.”

There is literally no one who knows what they are talking about who suggests that Trump's policies will be good for the economy. None.

It doesn’t matter to his voters. The GOP has made it so anyone with expertise or qualifications is presumptively untrustworthy. Only those who say fawning things about Trump are accepted. And they will be excommunicated immediately the moment they say anything critical of him.

That’s what’s so crazy about the old guard, who swear on their lives it was all about fiscal conservatism. Are they willing to vote for Trump or sit it out (which risks a Trump presidency) while knowing that our GDP will drop and that tariffs and deportation camps will cause a recession. That climate change will further thwart food supplies, adding to more inflation and increases for consumers. Pence is willing to risk it so he can control women, but what about the others? Same? What is the motivation here?

Trump doesn’t have any good ideas, much like his first Presidency term.

Trump still thinks tariffs are paid directly to the US Treasury. No wonder he bankrupted three casinos.

Checking in! Can someone please explain how Trump’s tariffs will lower prices?

I was driving through a rural farming area near where I live yesterday and while there are still some Trump signs, they’re small and dainty, dwarfed by the vast fields of corn stubble they sit on the edge of. These people’s livelihoods depend strongly on the government’s largesse and policy and there has got to be some awareness of what would happen to them if Trump wins.

I for one look forward to the destruction and despair that will result from a second Trump presidency. The man is worse than the old guard Republican Party - at least they had no meaningful agenda other than lowering taxes - he actually wants to drive the country off a cliff. Maybe that’s what we need in order to realize how absolutely bananas this man and his ideas are.

Country was fine under Trump

Democrats have made fast food a luxury item and set the world on fire.

When Trump left office, the national debt was 25% higher than when he came in, the economy had crashed and millions were out of work.

The idea behind tariffs is to slow down the waves of imported crap from China and India and increase production in the US.

There used to be a Made in America movement and many of us still support these ideals.

Our economy is a basket case. We import everything and manufacture almost nothing. We have a 2 trillion dollar budget deficit a 35 trillion dollar debt and a trillion dollar trade deficit. We are completely dependent on the weakening reserve dollar status that we earned by being the world’s greatest producer and lender. Now we are the exact opposite of those things by an exponential amount.

The country was demoralized and depressed, too. Several months of trying to evade a novel virus and keep our kids safe was unpleasant, let’s say.
