As a fellow millennial close in age to Meghan it was actually kind of depressing
The beige thing goes way back to her influence by Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, who died in a plane crash with JFk Jr in 1998. Bessette Kennedy was known for wearing Calvin Klein inspired outfits in beige and black Her style was very influential . There are photos of Meghan doing exact copies of the outfits.
It has been a hallmark of elder millennial style, the pared down, all white/brown/beige monochromatic thing, matching the similar all white/brown/beige kitchen. And what once seemed kind of chic, new and fresh, now looks incredibly dated and like a throwback to the mid 2010s, which was Meghan's heyday. Anyone who stays on top of trends knows that this kind of thing looks very out of date now and Gen Zs are always making fun of these stylistic choices. And for good reason- once you kind of pan out you realize how kind of ridiculous and overly stylized/ self conscious it often looks.
I don't personally think her style is dated. It reads more quiet luxury than sad beige.
With that being said, as a fellow millennial, I can appreciate Meghan sticking to her style rather than changing. As you get older you kind of learn what works for you and gain confidence to avoid overhauling your style every time trends change. She's in ankle jeans and a button down, it's not like she's in a J. Crew bubble necklace or something extremely dated.
I also do think this is one of those areas where she would never win and if she tried something excessively trendy she'd be made fun of for trying too hard.
It is very dated though, and you being a millennial may blind you to that fact since it's a style you still enjoy. In the way that plenty of boomers will still walk around thinking their outfits from the 80s or 90s are really cool, when it dates them and gives away their "era".
Nothing wrong with having a personal style. But you can still update things, keep them fresh, and move with the times- or hire people to style you if you cant figure it out yourself. ESPECIALLY if youre going to position yourself as some kind of leader in the aspirational lifestyle industry. Most people dont want to be walking around wearing a style that is a good decade or so passe.
Please give detailed examples of how to “update” and “freshen” the aesthetic of the show. I would love to hear what is considered updated.
The show to me reads as blandly pleasant. It’s the entire curated concept of a lifestyle show that seems dated more so than the details like clothing.
Seriously. I don't understand how straight cut jeans and a button down are "dated." She just dresses like a normal rich mom, which she is. It's millennial because millennials are moms now.
LOL. That's because you are a millennial! Dont you get that? In the same way a boomer isnt going to understand how their look is dated either. There are plenty of hip looking rich moms, not everyone is wearing what was en vogue in 2015.
Yes, I do get that for some people's style but Meghan's doesn't particularly read dated to me. Some other millennials' style does. I agree with the other poster, please give detailed examples of how to update and freshen the aesthetic of the show.
Yeah but that's what I'm trying to explain! You're a self admitted millennial and cant see the forest for the trees, lol. I did give some examples to the other poster but tbh it's not really my job to explain to middle-aged moms who think white skinny jeans and a chambray button down is totally chic about current fashion trends, lmao. You can always look up Vogue articles, use ChatGTP, or even open a dedicated thread here on DCUM if you truly want advice on updating your wardrobe (although this board skews Gen X so you might not get much help). Good luck!
Okay, first of all, the fact that you think people were asking for their own edification and not because you sounded ridiculous just blanket-stating that the show was dated. People were asking because they wanted you to show your work, not because they wanted your fashion advice lmfao.
Second of all, for someone claiming to be a fashion expert, there is a difference between chic and trendy. A button down and jeans is chic. Whatever flavor of the week the Gen z tiktok influencers are wearing is trendy.
The show *is* dated. The fact that that bothers a legion of self identified middle aged moms who are admitting that they developed their person style in the 2010s and havent updated it since the series finale of Girls doesn't change that fact, lmao.
A button down and jeans is no longer chic, not in the way most millennial women wear it. The fact that you cannot, cannot, CANNOT see this and are sooooo entrenched in the Isabel Marant aesthetic from 2010 is very, very telling about how out of touch you are with current fashions. Even the fact that you're so bothered by this discussion says that you know very well that your personal style stopped evolving a good decade back. And yes, you probably do look dated and old when you're out and about running errands, which is why I suspect you're so upset with the conversation.
Dp. Not sure what your point is here. I’m a millennial woman who didn’t like the show but her overall fashion is not really the issue, other than it being laughable that MM claims to cook in drapey all white clothes. And most millennial women I know don’t care about being trendy anymore. We’ve got way too much else to worry about between careers, husbands, kids and elderly parents. Not sure why you’re so obsessed with insulting people over something this silly.
It may not be the issue for you but it is for others, especially if she wants to attract a desirable younger demographic. I also dont hate MM, but was just sooooo struck by how out of date the whole thing seemed.
Yes, and we are saying she probably does not want to attract a younger demographic. MM is almost 45 years old. I don't think she's worried if a bunch of 19 year old tiktok "girlies" like her show.
Well she probably should, especially with how catastrophically unpopular she is with the GP. And relegating herself to the middle aged mom demo is pretty limiting, especially as time passes and that demo ages up with her.
But the type of show is inherently geared towards older audiences. Young women just aren't interested in learning how to decorate for kids' birthday parties.
Why can’t anyone do a practical yet aspirational cooking/home show? I’m sure there is one out there but I don’t know it. Jacques Pepin has a ‘fast food’ cook book that I like. Fast takes on elevated recipes. 20 something year olds don’t have time to make their own candles, nor do I (millennial) but 20 year dc and I would both happily watch a show that helped us make nice meals with short cuts like frozen veggies, canned blah blah. I don’t typically have time to go harvest my own honey when making a meal for the day.
Honestly someone should do that, targeted at college kids and recent graduates! I believe Daphne Oz tried (or maybe she wrote a book about it) back in the day. Though I feel like targeting yourself at the "youth" (I'm sure I'll be flamed by the troll for using a "dated" word in 3..2...) inherently does better in modern forms of media vs. longform like books or TV.
Ummmm AKSHUALLY it's dated to call kids "youth" that's how I know you're a millennial who liked watching Girls and wears button downs!!!!!!!
Millennial here. I never liked girls but whatever. What’s wrong with button downs? I’m genuinely curious…
Nothing. This poster is insane. They have been here for like an hour now (admittedly I have been on DCUM for an hour now too, so I am NOT shaming her for that) insulting people, calling them poor/fat/old/dated.
LOL! Coming from a supposed crew of moms (provided it's not just sockpuppets responding to each other) who have been on this thread for HOURS on end and have brought it to NINETY pages because of their inability to hear ANY criticism about MM? Do any of you have jobs?
DP. I’ve been here on and off this AM as I get ready for work - running late bc I’m not feeling well…
Serious question for you based on your writing style. Do you own a pit bull?
I think the lower economic poster who used the phrase "bit ching" unironically probably does And then got so mad that anyone would bring up wealth background...
OMG THAT WAS ME EARLIER!! You're still mad about that?! Because I wouldn't watch your dumb video because I said the lady was shrill? omfg lol I'm sorry that hurt your feelings.
Wait you're still here?! Girl! How long have you been hanging on this board arguing with people? OMG!!
DP Well...by that logic, that would mean you've also been on this board arguing with people.
I guess what's amazing to me is this was already going when I popped in and given the length of this thread it's clear this is not a one time thing. I dont know if this is truly a bunch of different users who just kind of regularly dogpile and gang up because they love MM, or it's just one crazy and kind of uneducated/poor SES sockpuppet talking to themselves... but it's really fascinating. I'm starting to think people just hang out here EVERY SINGLE day and now I'm wondering if we should like post this thread to TattleLife or something so those users can brigade right back and anger the Meghan Markle obsessives that seem to be in here. I've never seen a thread like this on DCUM before and it's grimly captivating
What is Tattle Life?
A gossip forum. They HATE MM and would have a field day with some of the posters here tbh
So are you like a regular poster there and just came here? Because you don't really fit in here and wanting to have an outside site brigade DCUM is kind of an ahole move. I'm not a saint and have been snarky on DCUM but I've never posted the website elsewhere to purposely get people to brigade it.
I come to DCUM from time to time and saw that this thread was super active and crazy but never expected anything like the posters on here tbh. It does seem like there's something weird going on- a bunch of pro-MM posters who kind of dogpile anyone with criticism and team up? Or some extremely bored person sockpuppeting? But yeah, DCUM threads get posted elsewhere all the time, it's really not a big deal. And it may do a lot to sort out the kind of unhinged craziness that has made this thread reach this point
To be clear, you think that people here have no life and yet you are a poster from another board who wants to have the site brigaded to "sort out" the fact that people here like MM?
Yeah, there's a real difference between casually posting here in various forums ONCE IN A WHILE and whatever bizarro world squatting that appears to be happening from a very small handful of pro-MM posters that has resulted in this thread reaching 90 pages in a matter of days. Very strange and odd behavior. And maybe it does deserve a counterpoint? What's wrong with that?
I've been posting throughout this thread but probably only posted 10-15x total? And I only look at it once or twice a day, I'm certainly not squatting in here for hours. I would assume others are similar.
What's funny is that I'm not some Meghan fan, I simply don't understand the hate. I feel this way about a lot of entertainment threads focused on a female celebrity on here. Some people are so hateful and weird about it and it makes me feel like I need to defend her. I also sometimes criticize, but my criticism is generally substantive (I wrote the post a few pages back about how I think her merchandising/branding for this show is bad, but that there is definitely an audience for it who really like it). I can't stand the people who just criticize her looks, the way she talks, who are mad about her because of her marriage or her relationship with her ILs, etc. It's all just misogynistic BS. Men never get picked to shreds like that even when they do objectively horrible things. All Meghan did was make an inoffensive little show about hostessing and look how worked up some of you are. Bizarre. It does make me want to come in and defend her.
You may question why you are so triggered by it though. I mean people are allowed to dislike her. Maybe it's not you but a lot of the posters in here actively make Meghan look worse with their catty gangups and thin skinned behavior towards any bit of criticism. I actually came in here pretty neutral, possibly more pro-Meghan, but the combativeness and juvenile behavior of many posters here makes you naturally want to disagree with them. It really does alienate people and drive them away and isn't an effective way to "defend" her
I don't need to question why I'm "triggered." I do this in real life too, when a group of women start gossiping and piling onto another woman out of what is obviously jealousy or weird personal resentment. I have defended coworkers and neighbors and other moms at my kid's school, even if I'm not friends with them, because I think this instinct women sometimes have to just circle up and rip another woman apart for sport is weird and unhealthy. That's what I'm doing here and I'll do it again for another celeb or for another woman in my life.
If you can articulate one VALID reason that you hate Meghan that is worth 90 pages of sht posting, I'll stop. I define valid as something she has done or is doing that negatively impacts you directly.
I dont hate Meghan, lol, and this is exactly the kind of mentally ill thinking that I think you should interrogate in yourself. Someone not feeling like the world's biggest fan of MM is not hating her, lol. I will say I think she was fairly catty and passive aggressive with the "It's Sussex" comment to Mindy Kaling. That observation does not make me a "hater" and you really, really, really should invesigate the level of black and white thinking you display in regards to this. Otherwise you will be that embarrassingly unhinged neighbor/coworker/mom who goes off on some kid because they didnt offer their child the last cupcake. It's okay for people to disagree or not love someone, doesnt make them a hater.
Isn't her legal name Rachel Markle? Megan is her middle name. That's not really cosplaying.
The point is her legal name is not actually Sussex as was claimed in a huge moment on the show.
She didn't make any claim about her legal name, she just stated that she identifies as "Sussex" not Markle. And then provided an explanation as to why. The fact that some of you are flipping out about this says much more about you than her.
I don't even think it was a "huge moment" on the show. It was a very brief conversation. YOU have made it a huge moment because for some reason it's very important to you that Meghan be forced to use her maiden name forever even if she doesn't want to, which is deranged.
But it's not her maiden name, lol. It's her current legal name, and the name of her kids as well. They have "Markle" on their birth certificate. At no point did she ever change their name to Sussex, which would be very bizarre considering it's no one's legal name in the family.
On the show, she claimed it is the name of her and the kids.
And that's why people are mad... because that is factually a lie.
She said it was their family name. It is their family name.
I know people who invented their family name by combining their last names when they married and then giving their kids this made-up last name. People can do what they want.
Let's not forget what got this poster so worked up. It's because I wouldn't watch a video she posted to me in response to me saying that Kate and William's kids use "Wales" as a surname at school! Will and Harry used it in the military! So, there is precedent for the BRF to use titles as last names.

OK, but I see Gen Z in the Metro wearing pants cuts and sweater styles that my mom wore in 1985. It absolutely floors me. It legitimately looks like they took one of my mom's outfits from the Sears Cheryl Tiegs catalogue.
I'm sure our resident Stacy London here will have an explanation shortly about how that's chic but Meghan's Cartier watch screams nouveau riche and millennial or some shit, idk.
Stacy London? Damn. Talk about dated references... you must be over 40.
DP Are you experiencing a midlife crisis? What is with the hyper fixation on things being dated?
I missed the memo where you can't even make an older reference lol.
I'm not, but you appear to be going through one whenever anyone points out (rightfully) that your clothing and references are dated. What's wrong with that? You're allowed to proudly walk around in your millennial page and have everyone able to pin your age, in the same way a 65 year old woman can waltz around in their QVC comfort sweatshirt and not be surprised that people pin her for being a grandma. You speak and dress with a very distinctive time/era/middle aged vibe. What's the issue?
I think there is a lot more than a comfort sweatshirt that would pin someone as a grandma.
You’re hilariously fixated on this. Are you one of those people who actually reads those ads that tell you things like stop carrying around a bag at a certain age and takes them to heart?
No, just someone who has a bare minimum ability to observe fashion trends and generational tendencies. That's why it's so amusing watching you crash out- you really thought there was nothing dated about your skinny jeans and ballet boots, and cannot stand to have someone point out that your style is passe now. Are you one of those people who genuinely believed that they could pass for ten years younger?
Writing all this and accusing someone else of crashing out is insaneeeeeeeee
It's the truth! Y'all wouldn't be going on and on and on and trying to defend yourselves and arguing that chambray is still cool for pages if you werent crashing out. That's what a crash out is, my love.
No one has argued that chambray was cool! You are the only one mentioning chambray shirts!
Yes someone was mad about chambray shirts being brought up, lol. I'm sure they thought they looked *very* hip and avant garde in their chambray
It matters where you are too. Chambray is preppy, timeless California casual.
it's really not. Chambray is super dated, especially in the styles that were popular for millennials.
You’re pointing out one particular style. But that doesn’t mean you understand fashion. Not trends. Fashion.
Ooh you are the "fashion expert." Please tell us all of your knowledge from your years as a designer. Understanding fashion is so important and critical.
I didn’t say I was a designer. As always, you make these leaps of logic to things that no one claimed (similar to your earlier claim that moms on here were saying that skinny jeans and ballet flats or chambray were the height of fashion - no one actually said that).
But yes, I worked in fashion for some years and believe there is a difference between fashion and trendy. You seem hyper focused on trendy stuff and are unable to see there are classic styles that may go in and out of being the trend of the moment, but are nonetheless not unfashionable. I’ll put chambray shirts in that bucket as one example.
You seem to be confused and not realizing that youre responding to multiple people who disagree with you. And posting that you USED to work in fashion is not really relevant considering you cant even realize that certain styles are distinctive and emblematic of certain eras. The fact that this very basic element of fashion has escaped you make it quite clear why you were not able to sustain a career in the industry long term.
So you weren’t the PP? And you didn’t claim that people said skinny was still hip? Really? You sure about that?
In any event, I never said that certain styles were not emblematic of a certain era. Again, you make things up. But there are certain clothes that cross eras and are never truly unfashionable as you keep claiming. Chambray shirts will always be classic and no one should toss them bc they aren’t super on trend right now. Same with van style sneakers. A well made trench coat. A well made wool crew neck sweater. Etc.
And all of these can certainly be styled with more on trend pieces (pair that chambray shirt with wide leg/looser jeans in a black, rather than skinny cut, as example) for a more modern look. Sure, it won’t be the height of today’s trendiness, but it’s classic and ‘fashionable ’.
Get it now?
Yeah, I am no the person you were responding to. Sorry, but chambray shirts, while they may have been classic at one point, were so coopted and widely popular during the peak millennial era that they are no longer timeless and in fact VERY timely and emblematic of a distinctive time. Again, the fact that you dont realize this is even possible, is indicative of exactly why you were unable to make it in the industry.
And, small point of contention, but California is really not a "preppy" area by any definition of the word. Again, you seem just clueless about fashion in general. No wonder you had to leave it
I finally watched an episode last night and kept waiting for all these super cringey moments to happen that had y’all so worked up. It is not a great show, but it’s not awful? I didn’t get to the part where she berated Mindy Kaling yet so I guess I should withhold judgement.

This poster wants to post this thread on the message board she came from (one that doesn't like Meghan Markle) so that they will come to DCUM and troll us, essentially. That's how sad and pathetic her life is. She's mad some people on a message board for moms in DC like Meghan Markle. I doubt she's even from DC.

I didn't say I don't have the attention span LOL. I said I had the attention span I just was choosing not to use it on some shrill self-proclaimed royal expert.

It is definitively her maiden name. Some women keep their maiden name. It sounds like Meghan does not want to keep hers but that there may be an issue with what she changes it to because the naming conventions in her husband's family are weird.
But I don't think it would be "bizarre" in that situation to simply legally change everyone's last name to Sussex.
This is actually a relatable problem to me because I had issues with my name when I got married and it was also hard to get people to call me by my new name (hyphenated) because people are stubborn and weird. The whole thing winds up being political and annoying when, hello, it's my name and you should call me what I tell you my name is. I did ultimately change my name legally but it took a while and in the meantime, I 100% expected people to call me by my newly adopted name, not my maiden name. So I'm totally on Meghan's side here. It is not some "gotcha" that her chosen name may not be her legal name. That's paperwork. Call people what they ask to be called or GTFO.

Let's not forget that YOU got upset that you got called out for speaking with a very low-SES tone and freaked out about it and have been whining on this board for several hours since. And proudly stated you dont have the attention span to watch a ten minute youtube video. An L all around.
Not a low-SES tone
LOL Idk why she got so mad... I'm sure it's not the first time people have made that observation to her face
Isn't her legal name Rachel Markle? Megan is her middle name. That's not really cosplaying.

Oh no sorry you misunderstood. I was laughing at you, not the poster you claim is low-SES.

In any case, it is her current name, and the current name of her children. There is no legal precedent for her to change her name to Sussex. Of course she could, in the same way I could march down to the courthouse and change mine to Sussex. But it would be pretty bizarre of both myself and MM to do that considering it's not our legal name in any sense.

This. And also this poster is acting like Meghan did an entire episode of her show about how Sussex is her legal last name and falsified a bunch of documents and L-I-E-D. But it was like 30 seconds in a show about something else, and she can't have lied because she was just telling a friend what name she goes by now and why.
I could tell my friend tomorrow that I now go by a different name and provide a reason for it, and because they are my friends, they'd be like "Ok" and we'd all move on. It's not a court of law, it's just expressing a personal preference about how I like to be referred to.
