When's the last time you honked at someone, and someone honked at you... and why?

Just honked half an hour ago on 66. A car was trying to merge in to my lane at 60 mph while his rear bumper was side by side with my front bumper, seemed to close to gave him a honk to avoid collision.

Also just honked at someone who blew through a neighborhood all-way stop intersection where I had stopped. Good thing I looked both ways before proceeding. He would have T-boned me on the passenger side where my kids were sitting (front and rear seats). Nice.

I'm have no patience for people who don't know the law, and cause traffic. Your ignorance will get once or more beeps.

OMG the only way to exit my old office building in Bethesda was like this and you’re giving me flashbacks. One way to one way, super short green light and interminable red when there weren’t any cars. Gah.

I can’t remember the last time I honked at someone. My drivers Ed instructor told us that having to honk is a sign of bad driving on the honker’s part.

I regularly honk at people who risk the life of my family by pushing into a lane where there is no space, or nearly directly into the side of my car, etc. I do a lot of driving, and sorry, I don't think this is bad driving on my part. I honk if there is imminent danger, but I also honk to let the person know that whether they are oblivious or not, they breached protocol. I also honk if someone is texting and driving 15 mph under the speed limit.

+1 This is me as well. This time of year I’m driving from DC to Jersey and back every weekend and there’s someone who’s drifting into my lane or changing lanes on top of me as if I’m invisible 2-3 times each way. The texting people I just pass, though, after pointing them out to my teenager. I think honking might startle them into doing something even stupider.

I do the same. I don't honk at the weaving drifting slow texters. They are already too stupid and their days are numbered. I just try to get past them/away from them, and I have my kids check out as we go by if they are texting.

This morning I got honked at for not blocking the box. Most of my driving is city driving and I will totally nose in there if there is any space, but this was one were I would have been hanging out in the middle of an intersection. I think the driver behind me was already pissed because I stopped for a kid stranded in the middle of the street.

I honk almost every day for one reason or another. The most common by an order of magnitude is a "gentle tap" honk for people not paying attention when the light turns green. It really bugs me that their inattention will cause, say, only 2 cars to make a light instead of 5 or 6, so I want to let them know to go. Really, they should thank me for it -- they get to text and have someone else tell them when the light changes instead of having to do it themselves.

Less common, but still at least weekly, is a single "full blast" honk for someone merging into my lane without looking. There's a particular intersection near my house where two lanes both turn left, and it has marked lane lines throughout the turn, but mid-turn people will try to move from the outer lane to the inner one.

And then once every few weeks or so I really lay into the horn multiple times, coupled with a middle finger if necessary, because someone does something so stupid and risky that it makes me angry that they're risking me and my family.

I can't remember ever honking at a pedestrian or cyclist, FWIW.

Heh. This happened to a friend of mine and the guy doing the honking wanting to fill up the box was Jack Evans.

People don't honk often enough. Yesterday I honked twice - first for someone veering into my lane, and the second was for someone distracted when the light turned green. imho people need to use their horn more often. It's not an insult and there's no need to get offended, but a reminder to pay attention and keep your eyes focused on the road.

I don't get honked at often (maybe 2-3x a year), because I'm a competent driver that uses my mirrors and pays attention to my surroundings.

Someone honked at me this morning and flipped me the bird because I was going 29 in a 25 zone and she wanted me to go faster. Courthouse Rd in Vienna where they often have a police officer clocking cars.

I lay on the horn if you're driving more than 15 under the speed limit.

Multiple times in the past few weeks, due to drivers swerving in front of me (narrowly avoiding collision) without signaling.

Someone changed lanes on me. I honked once when I saw they first starting to come over. That didn’t stop them so I had to honk again and hit my breaks. Once I passed them I saw they were wearing ear buds so maybe they didn’t hear my first honk.

I Stopped for a red light. Car behind me went around me and blew though the intersection where people were crossing in the crosswalk.

I get honked at more that I honk.

Yesterday I got honked at for not turning right on red in a situation where I thought it not yet safe to turn.

I don't honk much, so it's probably been a few months. I probably tapped the horn on somebody snoozing through the turn arrow on to Connecticut Avenue.
