When's the last time you honked at someone, and someone honked at you... and why?

Too many people only think about themselves about driving, and I use the honk to let them know: "hey, pay attention please. there are other people in this situation you know." Situations include people using their phones at lights (if there's "one Mississippi" and your brake lights are still on, you get a honk). Or you are making a left turn and refuse to pull up to allow people behind you to go around (and there would be space, if you pulled up). Or if they're not driving center-straight and their tire keeps hitting the line on a multi lane road.

Pay attention, be considerate, and you don't get a honk. I don't do it to be mean but to alert the driver to be more mindful of their surroundings.

The last time I was honked at was months ago, at least. Maybe a year or more. I think I probably succumbed to checking my phone at a light, though usually I'm very good about it.

Wow. This is a lot of honking.

After reading this thread, I can see why there is so much road rage.

That’s on YOU. You’re supposed to let people back out of spaces.

DP. If someone is driving past you, you don't get to back into them. This is why it makes more sense to back into the space - there's generally nothing behind you but a wall or a parked car when you back in, and then you can see what's going on when you pull out.

Oh no you did not just start this argument.

Apparently we must have this discussion again since people who pull forward into parking spots think it's okay to back up blind into traffic out of the parking spot and expect everyone else to accommodate them!

Dp

I think its common sense to wait for cars to be cleared BUT doesn't the law protect the backer outer?

Of course not! You are going into the main line of where traffic has the right of way!

No wonder the drivers in this area are so terrible!

+1

People really do not know the rules of the road.

This sounds insane. I have a company car and have been forced to take numerous safe driving classes. The instruction when back out is to STEP on the brake, grab the passenger headrest and physically lift yourself out of the seat and look back to get a 360° rear view to ensure the path is clear while backing out SLOWLY. No way in hell I’m backing out without doing damn near an exorcist swivel to see who’s coming! I’ve seen people use only their rear view mirror which is 1000% wrong.

I'm 5ft tall. There is no way I can lift my body enough to see over the seats while simultaneously reaching the pedals with my feet. No, I don't drive a big SUV.

But for what it's worth, because of my limitations (and because I'm smart), I'm a backer inner parker.

Doesn’t anyone have a rear view camera for backing out!!?? Jesus, I thought they were mandatory in every car built since like 2019. Yea I am sure lots of people drive older cars. But you’re acting like most people don’t have rear cameras.

I always pause a FEW seconds when a light turns green. I make sure the other side stops. I almost got T-boned once by a car that ran a light and I take 3-5 seconds to be safe.

You wait a full 5 Mississippi’s at a green light every time? That’s like as long as some turn light cycles.

I can think of two people I know who have backup cameras. I drive a 2007.

There are a lot incompetent, distracted drivers in this area.

Well I drive a 2015- so not exactly new - and it came standard.

Aha!!! So, you're the one! Lol.

Someone has to let you know that the light turns green. Since you obviously aren’t paying attention.

If I am approaching an intersection with a green light with the intention to turn right, and a driver is approaching the intersection from the opposite direction to turn left (i.e., also with the solid green, not an arrow), who should go first?

If you are turning onto a multilane road you can both turn at the same time. Just stay in your lane.

Sorry, I can't turn the steering wheel too far. It might break.

I gave it a few days ago when someone next to me started drifting into my lane. Thank God I didn't have PP's Drivers Ed. teacher. I'd rather be a "bad" driver than a dead or injured driver from someone else's failure to pay attention.

I got it a little over a month ago when approaching an intersection to turn right with no separate turn lane. It's a tight turn, particularly with cross-traffic waiting at the light, which requires the turner to approach very slowly. I drive a tight steering sports car and can safely take it faster than most. But even with my turn signal on well in advance, that still wasn't fast enough to for the tin can of a pickup barreling behind me. Oh well... Not like he didn't have several other through lanes to choose from, but I know not all of my fellow motorists are gifted enough to rub two brain cells together.

In general - If you frequently receive the horn, you drive like a jackass. If you frequently give the horn, you drive like a jackass.

I can’t remember the last time I honked at someone. My drivers Ed instructor told us that having to honk is a sign of bad driving on the honker’s part.

I regularly honk at people who risk the life of my family by pushing into a lane where there is no space, or nearly directly into the side of my car, etc. I do a lot of driving, and sorry, I don't think this is bad driving on my part. I honk if there is imminent danger, but I also honk to let the person know that whether they are oblivious or not, they breached protocol. I also honk if someone is texting and driving 15 mph under the speed limit.

I honked at someone waiting to turn right on red. It was a couple of quick taps. There was a huge sign that says right most lane can turn right on red after stopping. Even the pedestrian on the sidewalk was pointing to the sign for the driver. He didn't budge.

Last time I got honked at was probably for failing to notice that the light had turned green.

I honk when people don't know the law. For example, it is LEGAL in VA to make a LEFT at a red light, provided you are turning on to a one-way street from another one way street (and there are no signs saying otherwise, and the intersection is cleared).

I'm have no patience for people who don't know the law, and cause traffic. Your ignorance will get once or more beeps.
