My dh was watching it when it originally aired. He told me the plot, " A hs science teacher who is terminally ill starts making and selling meth". I passed. Some years later, it was on Netflix and I binged watched. The show is brilliant. Probably the best I've seen. It definitely was hard to watch in the last couple of seasons, due to the violence, but I am so glad I made it through. I also love Better Call Saul. |
Almost the exact same thing happened to me. I tried to watch the first episode but was skeptical at the premise because I work in education and wasn't buying it. Six years later, after it ended, my son told me I should try it again and I said, If it was free on Netflix I might, and he said, It is. I binged all six seasons in a few weeks. Absolutely loved it. |
I agree and feel the same way about people who say they won't watch The Walking Dead because "it's a show about zombies." Which it's not.

| Breaking Bad is a fundamentally stupid story with high production value and decent acting, and appeals mainly to people who are too stupid and/or racist to appreciate “The Wire”. |
Breaking Bad and The Wire have a lot in common: both very good shows; both intensely overpraised; both trading on their supposed gritty realism when each has major elements that strain credibility to the point of being magical realism; both kind of lost the thread and became a little too self-conscious about being “the best show of all time” in later seasons. (I really liked both, but neither was consistently the masterpiece people claim.). I guess I’d give the nod to the Wire, but the strengths and weaknesses of each show are hard to directly compare and it depends on what you like. BB is beautifully shot and the southwest deserts give it a kind of spectacle, and was effectively very suspenseful for a lot of it. The Wire has about the best (actually least disappointing since so many great shows fumble the ball at the end) ending of any major “prestige” show I can recall, while Breaking Bad’s ending was an absurd cop out that makes one revisit the merit of all that has gone before. I’m sorry, I tried Friday Night Lights but the first episode was such an overheated melodrama, kind of cliched to boot, that I just couldn’t. There is a lot to like about the Walking Dead, what I have seen of it, but it’s not at all the same level as things like The Wire or BB. I think The Last of Us beats it with a stick (but, again, I like Walking Dead). |
There you are! One of DCUM's most prolific and idiotic trolls. |
Although I love Kyle Chandler, FNL shouldn't even be in this discussion. And while TWD doesn't rise to the level of BB, it's early seasons were still very good. I was never a fan of The Wire and think BB and The Leftovers are some of the best TV I've ever seen. The Last of Us was pretty good, but doesn't rise to that level either. |

Breaking Bad is in a class of its own. It really is a masterpiece, from start to finish.
I felt that way about The Leftovers too. |
| I didn't like it at first either. My brother recommended it. Once I got past the first few episodes, I was hooked. Now, I couldn't get into The Wire and I tried. I'm from Baltimore so everyone here can't believe I have never seen it. |
Same here - I couldn’t get into The Wire either. Maybe I’ll give it another shot. |
I agree! |

Another woman who loves BB. But honestly I loved Better call Saul more- a little less violent and the family drama with Saul and his brother (Michael McKean is amazing!) was more interesting and less irritating than the dynamic between Walt and Skyler.
The pacing is different from BB but I HIGHLY recommend it if you haven’t tried it yet.. |

I also loved Breaking Bad (and Better Call Saul, and The Sopranos). I loved Ted Lasso, too, but something about a good, dark series warms the cockles of my heart.

I agree that Better Call Saul is a masterpiece. Truly amazing. I loved both. so. much. |
