Breaking Bad and The Wire have a lot in common:  both very good shows; both intensely overpraised; both trading on their supposed gritty realism when each has major elements that strain credibility to the point of being magical realism; both kind of lost the thread and became a little too self-conscious about being “the best show of all time” in later seasons.  (I really liked both, but neither was consistently the masterpiece people claim.). I guess I’d give the nod to the Wire, but the strengths and weaknesses of each show are hard to directly compare and it depends on what you like.  BB is beautifully shot and the southwest deserts give it a kind of spectacle, and was effectively very suspenseful for a lot of it.  The Wire has about the best (actually least disappointing since so many great shows fumble the ball at the end) ending of any major “prestige” show I can recall, while Breaking Bad’s ending was an absurd cop out that makes one revisit the merit of all that has gone before.

I’m sorry, I tried Friday Night Lights but the first episode was such an overheated melodrama, kind of cliched to boot, that I just couldn’t.  There is a lot to like about the Walking Dead, what I have seen of it, but it’s not at all the same level as things like The Wire or BB.  I think The Last of Us beats it with a stick (but, again, I like Walking Dead).[/quote]
