I think the comparison to Elizabeth Smart is a bridge too far, but I would not underestimate the degree of reproductive coercion in fundamentalist "Christian" contexts. She likely cannot access birth control, and has been brainwashed to believe that birth control = abortion = baby murder. Marital rape is not considered rape within their teachings. Young women are not educated and have no employment prospects. The road out is harder than you seem to think.

And they also teach that WOMEN are to blame for men's actions. Anna is at fault for her husband's cheating. If she had been more devoted to him and more submissive and more "available" for sex, he would not have cheated. She has been conditioned to feel shame for Josh's actions.

Anna has been conditioned her whole life to be subservient to men, first her father and then her husband. JimBob and Michelle messed up big time when they failed to deal with Josh or protect his sisters after he molested them. Remember, they never even bothered to get the girls any kind of counseling. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were blamed at least somewhat for “tempting” him given how much they protect him even now.

I feel like it's probably tax fraud but if so, why was he the only one arrested? I can't imagine this guy is bright enough to carry off any sort of financial scheme, even at the most basic level, without other conspirators. Like Daddy, who is propping him up. But even if they did go out for coffee this morning, 4/30, (gasp!) - that doesn't really mean anything. Is she banned from having coffee or something? Does going out for coffee deem her "unbothered" ? Do you expect her not to go outside her house for the next XX days?
