I am very impressed that it hasn’t been leaked.

Definitely this and/or fraud.

Why wouldn’t he have gotten bail if it was tax/fraud related?

He's being held and I don't think they can make a determination about bond before the initial hearing.

This. Although the fact that they put him in jail overnight means his arrest is not something they worked out with his lawyers beforehand. I feel like it's unusual, but maybe not.

I never doubted that Anna was scared and threatened, and now seeing that creepy mug shot makes me think even more that she’s in a really bad situation. I bet JimBob threatens her life.

This is apples and oranges. Anna can get out of this marriage. She can stop having children. I would be worried about him molesting their children after the last scandal. How can she stay with this creep?

I think the comparison to Elizabeth Smart is a bridge too far, but I would not underestimate the degree of reproductive coercion in fundamentalist "Christian" contexts. She likely cannot access birth control, and has been brainwashed to believe that birth control = abortion = baby murder. Marital rape is not considered rape within their teachings. Young women are not educated and have no employment prospects. The road out is harder than you seem to think.

All this is true. If the family wasn't famous. Anna has a very easy out: make a book deal, cash in, and EXIT to save your children.

Two of her siblings offered to get her out after the early scandals broke IIRC. She declined.

That happens more in white collar cases where the person already knows they are the target of investigation for embezzlement, securities or tax fraud, etc. Most arrestees do not get that kind of advance warning and accommodation.

Anna is a narcissistic, spotlight living horrible human being - she isn't a victim. Her family repeatedly offered her support and means to leave, but Anna enjoys being 'famous' just like a lot of the other Duggars. I've said it before and I'll say it again - the Duggars are as much money-milking fame whores as the Kardashians. They are not some naive country bumpkins.

It doesn’t matter how many resources you have access to if you have been brainwashed. The book Educated comes to mind. The author almost gave up living a normal life , well after leaving her home and attaining career success, to be with her crazy ass family. If it was hard for her to stay away when she was already out of it, I can’t imagine how hard it is to leave when you’re in it.

And they also teach that WOMEN are to blame for men's actions. Anna is at fault for her husband's cheating. If she had been more devoted to him and more submissive and more "available" for sex, he would not have cheated. She has been conditioned to feel shame for Josh's actions.

She procreated with a child molester, and chose to profit off of it. Believe it or not, women can be evil opportunists as well. Her children should be removed from her care and placed with the (somewhat) more sensible siblings, like Jinger or Jill.

That's what I was thinking - which makes me think it's not a financial crime.

If it's tax evasion related I feel like Jim Bob could be involved too. He's constantly making real estate deals and taught Josh everything he knows!

I bet he was like Benneke from Breaking Bad - back taxes, cooked books...and maybe the car dealership is a bit of a shell sorta like Skylar's car wash...just say'n

He turned himself in, they didn't haul him off. The family knew this was coming. I totally agree that I cannot believe it hasn't been leaked. I guess we'll know soon since the hearing is this morning.

If he turned himself in, why does he look so drunk/high?

I think I'd be drunk or high if I knew I was going to federal prison.

Totally not underestimating that Anna is likely emotionally stunted, she is a 32-year-old woman. Elizabeth Smart was a 14-year-old girl when kidnapped. Not exactly a fair comparison.

DP but that makes me think you don’t understand what “stunted” means.

Exactly. She got married at 19 (I think?). And wasn't taught ANYTHING before that other than how to be a wife and mom.
