47% of peoiple pay NO TAXES.

This would be true, if it were 2009, and the only taxes were federal income taxes.

However, not only is it 2020, but even in 2009, there were a lot of taxes that weren't federal income taxes. And there still are now.

Fair enough, but since the context is the presidential election, it’s safe to assume that we are talking about federal income tax, not sales tax or property taxes or other such things over which the federal government has no direct control. So yes, only the rich pay federal income tax.

Income taxes aren't even the only taxes the federal government levies. Something like 3/4 of people pay payroll taxes, but we always hear only about income taxes because rich people want to whine about the progressive taxes that they pay and not the regressive taxes that hit normal people harder. It's propaganda.

But President Trump wanted to cut payroll taxes too, and the Dems ridiculed that as well. You’re loosing this argument.

No he didn't. He wanted to defer payroll taxes with a vague promise to forgive the tax later. An actual payroll tax holiday plan as stimulus might have gotten support like it did in 2011, but it needed to be real, not a deferral.

I'm not having an argument about tax rates either, I'm pointing out the purpose of the "47% of people don't pay taxes" lie. Given that all you've got is new lies about payroll taxes, I'm not losing.

There was nothing “vague” about his commitment to forgive the payroll taxes. He couldn’t do it on his own though, and there was no way the Dems were going to give him that win, no matter how good it would be for those who need the relief the most.

"If you vote for me, I'll forgive them" without actually getting anyone to introduce legislation to make it happen is a vague promise because you're not doing anything to make it happen. Again, compare this to 2011, when an actual payroll tax holiday was worked on by both sides and passed into law. That was leadership to help people, this was not. Maybe if Trump had shown that kind of actual leadership, he'd have won. Sad!

When he promises something, I believe him.

But the beltway Libs think everyone is just like them!

They think they are like Baltimore and PG county and northern VA and Pittsburgh and Atlanta?

Thankfully, with Trump putting restrictions on student and h4 visas most super educated Asian American IT workers were already against the Republicans.

Now I just want all the racist old aunties and uncles to die off...because racists do not change their minds...they just get dementia, stroke and heart attack.

As for the UpCounty.... Poolesville will continue to have a population of rural poor White who resent that things are not great for them and they also resent all the "others" who come for the school and are gentrifying it. It is a catch-22 situation but a microcosm of why Trump appealed to his supporters. It is not because they are racists. It is because they are poor and others are not.

Asian Americans are screwed on both sides. Republicans want to divide and conquer and Democrats only want increased URM representation, so they are trying to choose between the lesser of two evils. Btw, Asian Am. IT workers like the visa restrictions bc they want less of their own coming here and increasing competition for jobs.

Please tell me what's wrong with that?

DP..nothing inherently wrong with it, except if it comes at the expense of excluding others, ie affirmative action.

Affirmative action is RACIST. Period.

It is absolutely not racist when you consider that many standardized tests are absolutely skewed toward one race. Do you also complain when rich people or alumni get special treatment. Do you realize that because my black father could not have gone to most universities that it would be impossible for me to get the alumni benefit. If you are going to discount one thing, then discount everything.

The best thing to come out of Maryland is me - when I’m leaving it

Kent and Talbot Counties beg to differ.

A 1 percentage point difference isn't exactly "begging to differ."

Maryland is a child welfare economy of weaklings that feed off taxes from places with adults that produce.

This state has become an economic disaster and is getting worse, and the quality of life stinks. Thank you for clearly articulating why I’m moving from here just as soon as I can manage it financially. The good news is that after last night, I have a nice map of places to do. Hint, it will be warmer where I’m headed.

Please, please go. I hope more people like you leave the state. This is pretty much my only comfort if Trump wins - that I'm surrounded mostly by like-minded people who see the white supremacist for what he is and aren't ok with it.

"that i'm surrounded by like-minded people' and there it is in a nutshell. So much for diversity of thought. Only skin-color matters.

Moco is so much better now than ever and I hope the rednecks left move out.

Mo Co schools are a mess. We pulled our kids out two years ago. It's just a reflection of a crumbling system. No thx

I gave over 20 years of my life to that school system. When I hear complaints from friends, their experiences reinforce my decision to QUIT Mo Co.

No regrets!

it's amazing that people keep saying good riddance to people. At some point you do need people to live here that have good paying jobs, and pay taxes.

If you keep pushing people out who can afford to leave, you are not going to have enough people left to afford to keep all those wonderful programs you want for MoCO and MCPS. One thing that has shown many businesses is t hat they can function without bringing people to an office. If that continues, you could llve anywhere.

People want to leave? Bye.
No one is pushing people out. But if some people want to leave because of the changing demographics of MoCo, hey don't let the doors hit you on your way out.

I lived in Maryland for a couple of decades before leaving.

What's striking to me (and this thread is no different) is how many people in Maryland seem to have their heads in the sand about the state's woes and challenges. Sure, there are some bright spots here and there, but the state's overall health is a significant cause for concern. Maryland is beset by the same tax burdens and COL issues that plague its neighbors further to the Northeast. It's economy has stagnated, and it clearly cannot compete with many of the Sun Belt states - let alone Virginia. There is a wide (and growing) disparity between rich and poor. And Baltimore remains a giant albatross around the state's neck.

The biggest problem about Maryland is that the state's decline has been slow and gradual. Each year things get a little worse. Things get a little more bleak. But it happens slowly. Many people adjust to the "new normal" and lower their standards about what is defined as acceptable growth and progress.
