The folks that live in NYC, shop at the Beretta Gallery and have horses in two or three states, are another story.

Of course. Not everyone who went to those schools is preppy, but in order to really be preppy, you have to have gone to a school like that.

You didn’t say this?

I did. There are schools like that in Baltimore, but there are many fewer of them than in the NYC & New England areas.

I said kids in those areas are more likely to be preppy than Baltimore kids.

You responded by saying there are no NYC preppy kids.

I actually don’t think there are none but totally disagree that it’s more likely that NYC kids are more likely to be preppy. NYC are much more sophisticated than Baltimore kids and preppy is not really all that cool anymore.

How do you define preppy? Maybe that’s the problem.

Is it solely how someone dresses? I think of it much more as a lifestyle/wealth thing than whether a kid wears a polo shirt or not.

The schools you are talking about might have some preps but they are not the cool kids or the predominant kids. Again, Robert Chambers and the 80s left the building a long time ago.

Preppy. Noun. a student or graduate of an expensive prep school or a person resembling such a student in dress or appearance.

So my school/wealth-based definition is absolutely there. You seem to be more focused on the second part of the definition?

Sorry — clearly it’s an adjective.

The NYC are the only preps poster contradicts him/herself pretty readily.

From Wikipedia:

“Preppy (also spelled preppie) or prep (all abbreviations of the word preparatory) is a subculture in the United States associated with old private Northeastern college preparatory schools. The terms are used to denote a person seen as characteristic of a student or alumnus of these schools. Characteristics of preps in the past include a particular subcultural speech, vocabulary, dress, mannerisms and etiquette, reflective of an upper-class upbringing.”

Again, that’s all about clothes.

The dictionary agrees with me that it’s as much about schooling/pedigree as anything else. I don’t really care about your random websites.

Although it’s worth saying that one of your website cited “old money” as one reason why Boston still has the preppiest colleges.

Ever been to Martha’s Vineyard, Southampton or Nantucket? Ever been to the University Club, Harvard Club, Yale Club, etc. in NYC?

And you made my point with New York Yacht Club.
