Tell me again why we aren’t opening elementary schools in at least a hybrid format?

Is this up to date enough for you?

that’s a study of India, which is completely different from the US (as acknowledged in the press release).

DP. Exactly. Nobody says kids cannot transmit the virus. The important data right now though is that SCHOOLS, where they are open, even fully open with just reasonable precautions, have NOT been found to be driving community spread. Trust me, they are looking into this in places like Germany where they know that schools are a priority but also have rapidly rising case counts (due to reasons other than schools).

Notice the percentage of white vs brown and black families that feel comfortable coming back to school. And what percentage of teachers feel comfortable coming back to school.

Wow. Now that’s the transparency I want to see at our school.

The question of whether to open schools should be decided by whether we meet health standards for safely reopening (which DC does in spades). The question of whether to reopen shouldnt be subject to a vote. That's absurd.

I think people should be able to decide by majority what they feel is safe.

Totally disagree. Decisions should be based on science and schools should open. If you as a family or teacher don’t want to attend, stay home and homeschool for a year.

All families should not be made hostage just because some families don’t believe in science and facts.

You mean majority white families who don’t think it’s fair POC’s opinions are dictating decisions.

seriously, STOP.

I will when some white parents stop acting like only their feelings matter. I truly do wonder if it was majority white people dying what some of you would think.

you’re a cynical bullsh*tter using race for unethical reasons. if you cared about black kids, you’d be tearing your hair out about the loss in learning.

Yea, that's what white people say when their privilege is being exposed. 'What?? Racism has ended' 'White privilege is BS!' 'There is not such thing as systematic racism, Black people are ALL lazy!' Etc. Etc. Etc.

If you think race has nothing to do with this you'd absolutely be incorrect. Those in the black community who need it are being taken care of through CARES. Special needs students, no matter the color are being taken care of.

So what's the issue? Oh not all the middle/upper middle class White children are being invited back for term 2. Many who are doing PODS, have part time nannies, and utilizing all the other resources they have.

I am super curious how you justify CARES over an additional classroom with the same priorities as the existing one. Is there any possible argument that the CARES classroom is better for poor kids than being in a classroom with a teacher? Oh, there’s not? The only justification is that teachers don’t want to work and don’t care if their much poorer aides have to? Oh. Right. It’s all about privilege. You were right after all.

Interesting how you try to come up with such an idiotic conclusion. CARES is for CHILDCARE because these people can't supervise DL.
We can't have in person for every child that needs it so this is the next option, you have to be a dumb*ss to think DL is better than in person for all kids.

There aren't enough healthy teachers to do in person, the end. I love how you are trying to equate White privilege to teachers teaching from home, that is such a thing someone who doesn't care to understand what true privilege is would do, very divisive and shameful of you.

Oh also, FYI aides were also given the survey to support DL instead of in person. Before you start pretending you know anything maybe you should do a simple google search.

I sincerely hope you just do us a favor and move to a 'nice majority white city.'

You presumptiveness about “many” have pads and nannies and such is off-the-mark. Most middle class kids don’t have these things and need school desperately.

It’s BS to decide that you don’t have to worry about a whole demographic because you’ve decided to paint them as all living like the wealthy. It’s just not true. Your brush is too broad.

Uh huh, telling me that as you live in your little gentrified neighborhood. I did not say all white people, those whose children have special needs should be in person. If you are low SES and need childcare, absolutely CARES for you.

And eventually all children in person. I'm just thinking about the kids who need it the most right now.

with all due respect: get some freakin’ perspective. you think it’s ok for black kids to get substandard education in a group setting overseen by minimum wage black workers, but it’s racist to say schools should just actually be in person? this is such an absurd line of argument that I can only conclude you are either a) stupid or b) trying to leverage race to make your argument. or maybe both. yeah probably both.

Just a general request:

- Please stop lumping colleges in with schools when we talk about reopening schools in DCPS. The problems colleges face around Covid are very distinct. The kids live on campus! They don't have parental supervision. They are demographic known for risk taking around health and safety. It's so different. I don't care how many colleges have had to shut down due to Covid outbreaks. It's not relevant to whether a 2nd grader could safely go to school 2 days a week.

- Please stop assuming that everyone who wants schools open is white or rich. Many of us are neither! A lot of us are just looking at the data, seeing the risk is extremely low for our very young children, and then looking at our children, who are absolutely miserable and struggling, and concluding that maybe there's another way. If you want to argue that opening schools could hurt black and brown communities, I am very interested in those arguments and want to know more because I am worried about my community, too. But don't assume I'm just some wealthy Karen just because I think in-person schooling is a good idea.

- Check your sources. Half the time someone will post an alarmist link to a study that looks like it says kids are super spreaders, but then I investigate a little bit and it turns out that it doesn't say that at all, or there have been three studies since then showing the opposite. Could you please try to make these argument in good faith? Many of us are genuinely interested in both public health AND ensuring our kids get a good education, and it's exhausting to constantly have to have these side arguments about data that isn't even relevant.

Anyway, carry on.

Also central office staff aren't minimum wage, just FYI. They are also outsourcing from various places but yes I'm sure many are Black but don't pretend you GAF just to fit your narrative of 'the poor black children don't deserve this'

I actually can’t even tell what you’re trying to say. What do you think your second sentence means and how does it relate to/refute what the PP said? PP is obviously saying that anyone who thinks this plan is better for poor kids than in person because of the CARES aspect is insane. That’s obviously right. CARES classrooms are better than nothing for poor kids, but obviously worse than school.
