MASTER Cancel Travel b/c of COVID-19 Questions Thread

So we are supposed to go to Seattle for spring break. Given the COVID-19 situation there now, would you keep your travel plans? We kind of fall outside of the currently known age window of big risk and are all relatively healthy but I also don’t want to be irresponsible and be a carrier or have to quarantine ourselves when we return. Would you go? Two adults in their 40s and a 3YO.

Why were you planning to go? Family? Special event?

I’d pass. Why not head to the Caribbean instead?

I would go.
It’s not like you are going to China...

Spring Training in about a week with my family, including my elderly parents (85 and 92). I think I know the answer to this but my parents are so looking forward to going to Florida and are huge Nats fans..

Earlier PP, I am a no on Seattle.

To FL, PP: let me know what you decide. My parents are planning to fly to FL with my 91 y/o grandmother in mid April and I said they maybe should reassess (but I do think they can wait the beginning of April to decide).

Just my luck, but I had planned a family trip to Japan and Korea in late August. I had already booked the outbound flight to Japan, but haven't booked the inbound flight from Seoul. I'm thinking about switching to Taiwan, but hoping it might resolve itself by late summer. Unfortunately, I had already transferred my points from UR to United.

No cause for panic. Wash hands.

No by all means we should cease doing anything and crash the economy to avoid a virus no worse than an nasty cold for most people

Who did you hear that from?

Everyone who is literally canceling all possible plans and forgoing regular activity! There’s a reason the markets crashed this week

No who told you that it’s no worse than a nasty cold? Surely not the 3000+ people who have died. Turn off Fox News.

Out of how many people who got it! Yes, doe 99.98% of people who contract it it will not be a big deal.

The problem with this line of thinking is it’s individually centered. IOW, typically American.

While it may be like a bad cold for you so you will continue with your normal activities- work, shopping, parties, travel, school, etc. You will continue to pass this onto to many more people. People who may not fare a lucky as you or perhaps their kids may not or their parents may not.

You may survive barely scathed, yet you may have contributed to the deaths and/or very serious illnesses of others because of your lack of precautions.

That’s why containment is so important. It’s ridiculously difficult to give up our freedoms temporarily for the greater good of our communities but it’s the only proven method that has worked so far. We have no medications for it, no vaccine for it. We don’t have hospital resources for it.

Look at Washington state right now. They bought a motel to provide a make shift hospital. Has that ever happened because of something “no worse than a nasty cold”?

So, like I said, some of you want everyone to cease activity and stay home forever. I’m glad “normal activities” like work are optional for you. It’s not for some of us.

People aren't talking about going to work here. They're talking about optional trips.

A significant percentage of people who seek care end up with a severe illness (over 10%) and 2-4% die. It might be mild for a young, healthy person but a lot of us have family members and people we care about who would be at significant risk. Of course you have the option to take your China vacation but don't spread lies about the severity of the illness.

If you’re posting on this mega travel related thread then my guess is your work definitely offers sick leave/PTO. This thread is about mostly from what I see OPTIONAL travel for vacation. Along with some optional travel for conferences.

Post your fake news about this not being worse than a nasty cold elsewhere.

If you don't have anyone in your immediate family who's in a high risk group, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Silver-lining, maybe crowds will be down.

While they might not let you cancel - they may let you reschedule. Call if you decide you want to delay.

Adding .. if there is a confirmed case related to Disney, it's highly likely you will be able to cancel right up until you get on an airplane and get a refund of anything you bought direct from Disney (so probably not any rented DVC points or tickets through resellers). I have a friend who canceled the night before her trip when the last hurricane came through. Other than having to wait on hold for hours, she had no problems with getting a full refund.

No-- we also have a family trip planned to Aruba then.

We are also planning to head to Grand Cayman in three weeks. I'm still 50/50 on it - I"m not worried about getting sick, but rather getting stuck in quarantine off U.S. soil. I have until a week before to decide - does anyone think we can get a sense of whether a quarantine would happen in the subsequent two weeks? I'm guessing not - they can pop up at any point, right? I know the island recently turned away a cruise hip, but will they be able to do that with the influx that's surely expected for spring break?

We're heading down for Spring Training this weekend with my asthmatic mother-in-law (in her 70s), and she has no qualms about going, FWIW.
