Gonzaga Kairos Vandalism

Dozens of students from Washington’s prestigious Gonzaga College High School, on a spiritual retreat in southern Maryland, ransacked a cabin and an unoccupied home, shattering windows and cabinets, punching holes in walls, throwing a toilet into a yard and destroying property throughout both dwellings, according to several Gonzaga employees who were told of the incidents at a staff meeting at the school.

A number of the students pulled a refrigerator from the cabin and pushed it over a cliff into the Potomac River, which runs along the property, the employees said.

The acts took place during afternoon breaks at the retreat on two consecutive days, Jan. 30 and 31. Approximately 40 to 50 students, mostly juniors but some seniors, took part in the vandalism, according to the employees, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they feared retribution.

What kind of retreat was this? Where the hell were the chaperones? Not only should kids be expelled, but staff should be fired. 40-50 kids? That’s not a few bad apples. That’s a school culture gone to hell.

I wonder if drugs were involved. And interesting that staff told the school...apparently they did not believe it would be handled appropriately at school. Cross Gonzaga off the list...looks like co-ex for my son.

I was a lifer at a so called big 3 and always found the prep students to be decent human beings. The Gonzaga students I crossed paths with were crude and violent. I’m not at all surprised by the consistent reports of egregious behavior by that lot. But given the lack of introspection and accountability with the rampant and endemic pedophelia in the Catholic Church, I’m also not at all surprised that this boorish behavior is generational at Gonzaga.

The Gonzaga leader said “each student has been issued consequences commensurate with his involvement (Dad's donations).” Those consequences (checks), he wrote, “mark only the beginning of a longer process for students to reflect on their actions (learn that some payoffs are annuities).", learn from their mistakes (That Dad can write checks that make everything ok), and make amends consistent with our Christian ideals(growing endowment).”

That was THE most bullshit statement ever.
If they told me that those boys were going to personally build a new functioning house there then I’d think that maybe they were being taught something.
They were already at the retreat center ‘reflecting on their Christian values’ when they destroyed a house - how is more ‘reflection’ going to help?

GZ parent here and I agree with you.

What’s with them ? Are they not qualified to be directing your boys? Seems like it.

When did Mater Dei kids start going to GZ en masse? I always though MD fed to Prep.

The GZ. Dads are wasted at football games too.

Oh wait your talking about the students.

I want to Prep parties in the 80s so I respectfully disagree. They were dangerous places for girls.

Now I have daughters and sons and 50 nieces and nephews... my family has attended GZ and various other schools since 1920's I have a pretty good sampling of the culture at many schools.

GZ was more middle class but less boorish.

You wouldn't even believe that social media posts that GZ boys put up. Their sports social media account was taken down by the company for pornographic content. Not too soon for my 13 year old nieces and most 11-13yo 7th and 8th graders (I mean 15-16 if you go to GZ) to read it ... nice to post "cum on your face."

Thanks GZ boys.

Destroying the stands at the soccer plex one year then Catholic the next year.

Come on... you didn't see this coming?

When the lax coach left a whole hoard of them went to GZ and this is exactly one of the year. The MD kidscare a huge problem at both schools.

Lots of kids get their acceptances and then decide after these kids pick their school and try to pick another.

Often we try to explain high school is much larger and you generally won't need to deal with these kids for 4 more years but they would rather just make a clean break..

Just for clarification, I know nothing about the soccer plex incident, but I am a CUA alum and employee, the contract was via the WCAC not Gonzaga and the WCAC was responsible for any damage etc. The Gonzaga students did nothing wrong at DuFour Center, there was just a lot of them and the stands/fence couldn’t stand the weight. Have you ever been to a CUA football game? At most there are 100 people in the stands.

So? Hundreds of rev'd up kids jumping on stands is going to do foreseeable damage.

Well yes. CUA is not known for spending money wisely on their infrastructure. And since their football games are not, shall we say, as spirited as a highschool championship game, I’m not exactly sure it was “foreseeable”. CUA does not place blame on Gonzaga students per se, but they will certainly think twice about entering into another contract for something like this. On second thought, they’d do it again in a second for the money.
