My problem with this scene is that little Nick and purposely smudging his muddy shoes ALL over the tile floor as if he was painting. Kids are kids, but if I was that hotel I'd be leaning towards kicking them out for that. |
Not unrealistic for a hoity hoity place. |
| It seemed odd that the movie set the opening scene in 1995 London but the book had it in 1986, when most of the other details stayed the same. |
The book came out in 2013 and was set a year or two before. I think Nick and Astrid were younger in the book in that scene and Eddie was in it, as he was older, but around the same age as N and A are portrayed in the movie. |

| I really hope the DVD will contain a ton of deleted scenes. Sounds like the original cut (which presumably the public will never see in its entirety) was well over three hours and a lot of what was in the book didn't make it to screen. The Prince William/Harry line from the trailer even got cut. |
Really. Just go see one of the many, many whitewashed movies where 98% of the cast starts as Caucasian and they whitewash the Asian characters. Here's a nice long list of whitewashed movies that you'll probably love to see instead: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitewashing_in_film#List_of_films |
Don't feed the troll. This is exactly the kind of back and forth he has been trying to start in this thread. He does this successfully in other threads, and very quickly turns them away from topic into an argument where everyone is calling everyone else racist. Ignore his obvious attempts at trolling. Don't take his bait. |
Yes it is. It’s not like they were in overalls chewing on straw. On what planet would there be a stereotype that Asians couldn’t possibly be rich? |
You need to get out more. There are many places like that even now. And there were more in 1995. Asian from a "poor" rich Asian family (not on their scale, but still rich). |
I get out plenty. This scene was completely unrealistic. It was just another attempt to make a dig at evil whitey. I actually enjoyed the movie outside of that scene. |
Unrealistic? Are you even Asian? I am and I can tell you that it was not unrealistic, especially not for 1995. |
PP cited what happened to Oprah in Paris in 2005. Something similar happened to her in Zurich in 2013. So please tell us again why the scene was unrealistic? |
NP. In the book, that scene was set in the mid-80s and yes, it was completely realistic for that era. And even in mid-90s, things like that were still happening. |
Do you mean it's not relateable to people who aren't Asian? Because I disagree with this. I'm white and don't need my race to match someone else's in order to relate to them. |
