New Girls High School Lacrosse Club

Capital Lacrosse Club is a non-profit run by volunteers. Unfortunately evaluations are subjective and because Capital has been the gold standard for local lacrosse for over twenty years parents get upset when their child doesn't make a team. The coaches and talent evaluators are truly doing this because they love the game.

Capital is not like other clubs its not a for profit enterprise. They are not selling dreams to kids that have no shot of playing in college. Yes many kids from other programs play in college and not every kid neeeds to play for Capital. The program is as altruistic as possible in a subjective sport. Their are no parent coaches and they all have professional experience having coached a high school team. In fact Capital has placed over 90% of its kids in College programs which is exactly what its supposed to accomplish.

Capital could field three or even four teams most years but the point of Capital was to build the best teams from the area. Every other program is run as a for profit enterprise and some field three or four teams just to make money. Lets try to keep things in focus even when disappointment happens there are other options and its not the end of the road.

Lets all get back to enjoying the game we love.

And is the crazy anti-Capitals person also the crazy anti-Pantherea person?

Yellow Jackets out of Long Island fields at least 4 teams and their tryout has over 600 kids. Capital has chosen not to pursue that model but given all the animosity created by having only two teams maybe as the only non-profit they should take a third and fourth team. It would probably eliminate all the negative attacks from the for profit clubs. Anytime you inject money into the equation people get crazy.

There are a lot of people who are anti-Capital. Do some research, ask some school coaches. The bad press has been increasing for a while now but started long ago. The reputation has long been that it is supremely political. The person on here spouting the kumbayah nonsense based on it being a non-profit is probably the current directors or board members trying to clean up their image. Its certainly not a altruistic organization in any way. The truth about Capital is much more complex and includes that it was started by parents, is still overseen by a parent board, and most telling, has coaches that also work at various schools in the WCAC and ISL. These folks all have a vested interest in seeing very specific girls succeed. The resulting politics are nasty.

The anti-Panthera stuff is probably directed at the owner as there isnt much else for people to target since they just started. The two are unrelated and the Capital stuff doesn't belong on this thread.

I'm a Capital parent, and I'm glad that Panthera is another option for high school lacrosse players. Giving lacrosse-loving girls as many options as possible is a good thing. I would also like to comment on previous posts:

--For the past two years, ~90% of Capital players (Blue and Orange combined) have gone on to play in college. While there may be better individual players at other clubs, at the TEAM level, Capital Blue and Capital Orange are the two strongest teams in the DC area
--Capital's second team (Orange) beats most top teams from clubs around the country. For example, this past year 2021 Orange beat the top teams from MC Elite, 3D Mid-Atlantic (a combo team comprised of their best players from several teams), and teams from New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas, etc. They also beat the second teams from Skywalkers and M&D.

There are players from every DC area club who go on to play at excellent lacrosse and academic universities. Capital just historically has had a higher % of them. I can't say that it's better to be a mid-level Capital Orange player vs the top player at Cardinal/VA Metro/Crash/MC Elite, but I can say that Capital's recruiting record is the most impressive one in the area. And if your daughter is playing for any one of those clubs, I wish them the best in the recruiting process!

As an aside, for the class of 2022, Capital Blue likely has 12 players from Stars Blue, 4 players from Pride Red, 1 player from Stars Black, and 2 players from other clubs. Capital Orange has 6 players from Stars Blue, 4 players from Pride Red, 1 from Stars Black, and 7ish players from other clubs. I may be off by a player or two so please don't quote me. The Stars teams are not as dominant as they have historically been, so my guess is that Stars Blue will be less of a feeder to Capital Blue in the future.

Yellow Jackets operates in many different geographical area, Capital does not. Yellow Jackets still consistently field the best teams in the country.

None of the Baltimore teams fields more than two teams.

The only people I have found who don't like Capital are the Competitor Clubs $$$ and parents of kids that don't that don't make Capital. Everyone wants to tryout against the best. Its hard to criticize the results Capital has delivered. I have two daughters who played lacrosse at clubs other than Stars and one ended up playing at Capital (plays in College) and one who currently plays for Virginia Metro (didn't make Capital). So I can say favoritism doesn't happen its truly a blind process from what I experienced both tryouts were fair (the girls that made Capital were better). The reality is a lot of Stars players don't make Capital and many times their parents are the most upset. I miss the program and have only fond memories

As an aside, for the class of 2022, Capital Blue likely has 12 players from Stars Blue, 4 players from Pride Red, 1 player from Stars Black, and 2 players from other clubs. Is this right? So Stars black is basically a dead end? Looks like you are better off going to another club if you don’t make blue.

What this shows is the Capital process works and what you end up with is a magnet progran that has girls from all over the metro area and as far as Richmond. The Panthera Coaches/Boosters should really stop posting. Come back in three years and tell me how many kids you place in college programs. Otherwise its all hot air.

Look if your a parent or a kid why would you not tryout for Capital they obviously have the most success in placing girls. All this nonsense is being drummed up by people who want to make money from your kids. The point of a travel lacrosse program is to place kids. Doing that at a 90% clip is very impressive. I work as a business manager and if you told me every vendor I hired would deliver 90% of what they said they would do. I'd give them every outside contract.

Look at the websites of the other clubs all good programs but not close to the 90% number. Best I can tell most are less than 30%. So yes Capital misses some girls but not many.

With the growth of the game I really encourage Capital to grow the number of teams they field. They obviously have the right model and the game has grown in the area to the point they need to add teams. It would make the parents alot happier and keep the $$$ makers at bay. Please Capital add more teams the area needs your expertise and my daughter wants to play for your team!!

NP and Capital/Stars parent. You are assuming that all Stars black try out for Capital and that if they don’t make Capital they hit a dead end. Neither of those assumptions is accurate.

Ninety percent last year? Or over some longer time period? Of course, quality of the school and lacrosse program also need to be considered. Capitals does well with a few of the Ivies, I don’t see a lot of top 20 programs on the list, amd I do see a lot of D3. 2018 commits aren’t even listed. I personally don’t take issue with the assertion that the Capitals are the most competitive club in the dc area, but the boosterism seems fairly overblown, especially with the quality of the Baltimore area clubs less than an hour away.

Also, with all the claims that the Panthera owner is posting here, it strikes me that someone from Capitals is more likely to be doing so. This whole thread is pretty ridiculous, frankly.

I agree. I think 90% is a bit of a stretch. Does this look at ALL the girls, or just the Blue team? Does this count the girls who decide not to play in college? Capital is very successful with getting their girls recruited, but 90% is not a real number.
