Looks like some more schools need to have their names changed (Thomas Jefferson)

17:24 I'll extend the benefit of the doubt and assume that you don't mean to be antagonistic. I thought it was clear that I was sharing Mr. Hogan's testimony and describing what I thought was an interesting contrast of the views as presented, on that evening. Mr. Hogan's testimony was notable in that he clearly did not perceive the issues that many other people testified to. There are two sides to this and I've made a lot of effort to understand and empathize with the views of both. I recognize that this is an unusual approach to take. I'm an academic so perhaps I'm a bit aloof from the passionate engagement of so many. I hope that puts my views in a better perspective. I hope this issue results in reconciliation and further understanding and pride in our school and community. Otherwise, we have learned nothing and righted no wrong.

I think Dr. Braband is going to be strongly tested. It is clear from the meeting the other night that calling the school "Stuart" is not acceptable to the changers. ( I have no idea what the reaction of the "keepers" is.)

If the "changers" go in insisting that a Civil Rights activist be selected, and not be open to another option, that will result in worse division.

My personal opinion that the way to have resolved this would have been for the administration to quietly suggest that the JEB be removed from uniforms, etc. and to refer to the school as "Stuart". But, once this became a cause celebre, there is no going back

Naming the school Stuart would save money and let the keepers have a little something. But, the changers made it clear that won't fly. So, I suspect that it will get worse. If Stuart is not acceptable, then I suggest that, as a compromise, they choose a geographic name. I doubt that will happen.

Not only is there extensive evidence that Confederate monuments, schools, and flying the CBF went up during the Civil Rights movement, the very school was are discussing was named for a Confederate in 1958. So, yes, maybe in the big wide world there are a handful of schools named for Robert E Lee that were thusly named before Brown v. Board, but the evidence isn't on your side here.

Trends have nothing to do with evidence. Just because you want to believe it does not mean it is true. These Board members supported and encouraged the demeaning of earlier Board members with no evidence. Look around Fairfax County. This was an area of the Deep South in those days. Manassas is just a few miles away.

So...you are trying to argue that the decision to call a newly integrated school by the name of a Confederate figure was a coincidence, and your evidence is that Virginia was "an area of the Deep South" at the time?

How do you expect that to convince a reasonable person that the reason behind the name was not racial animus, particularly considering all that Fairfax County was doing to avoid integration?

Since we already know that the name is going to be changed, can we start coming up with some options.

You have to give some credit to Loudoun for picking names like Stone Bridge, Briar Woods, Rock Ridge, Broad Run -- you really can't make those controversial. They should last the test of time.

What can we come up with in Fairfax for the HS formerly known as JEB Stuart? Any suggestions?

Nearby streets could be inspiration:

Crosswoods HS
Juniper HS
Valley HS
Columbia HS
Valley Brook HS
Ravenwood HS
Seven Corners HS
Hillwood HS

There are lots of options. Stay away from the honorific names and

Not picking on your names, but none of them remotely provide a sense of place - you could be anywhere in the country (though Seven Corners might be the closest, at least to locals). Much like the last two high schools built in Fairfax - Westfield and South County. It's all Generica. That is what we have come to in this country.

I was interrupted...

... stay away from the honorific names and avoid problems.

I don't think high school names need to provide "a sense of place." They simply need to provide a name so that people know what to call the school, and ideally, it would be something that "generic" that can come to have meaning over time (based on the school community itself).

The school community will grow into its name.

Still not getting your point other than you're quite taken with the fact that a black man came and testified that he wasn't offended by the school's name. Do you plan to listen to the perspectives of the black residents of the county who have expressed the opposite view?

Fairfax went from honoring almost exclusively white men to the generic geographical names like Westfield and South County, skipping any period where a significant number of women and POC were honored. Why is that not something to address, regardless of whether the "keepers" like it at first?

In two years the kids will have embraced the new name/mascot.

This whole issue has nothing to do with DJT.

It is about changing the name of a school --that will lead to changing the names of multiple schools at great expense to the children and taxpayers of Fairfax County.

I agree that some may find the name offensive--but my beef is justifying the change based on bogus accusations against the School Board that named it. I understand the issue, but the money would be better spent in the classroom.

If the name is offensive that is unfortunate. However, it could have been used as a learning tool rather than an opportunity to spend what will likely turn out to be millions and millions of dollars on something that will not aid the education of our young people.

Our School Board members have NO common sense. McElveen is now turning to sexual assault as his next issue--when there are so many more things that impact our kids. And, I seldom agree with Moon, but the "unintended consequences" of TDK's motion on learning about the names of schools is silly. Think "South County". Think Westfields which is named after an office park.

Think about the school names that glorify the killing of little innocent animals during events such as fox hunts! [Sarcasm] Kids will be traumatized to learn about that!
