Hell to the no.
My ancestor is TJ and he may have owned slaves but *shrug* lots of people did back then. It's a reality of history. I hope this current trend of erasure ends soon, because it's incredibly silly and dumb. |

Sometimes you have to judge people against the backdrop of the society they lived in, and not by how the world is more than 200 years later. In their public lives, Washington and Jefferson played an enormous role in the establishment of an American democracy. In their private lives, they were owned slaves, which is a travesty now, and was an awful thing then. But was considered ordinary and acceptable by society at the time.
Kennedy is being revered on his 100th birthday. He also screwed anything that moved. etc. When did we become a nation that was completely unable to deal with complicated issues? Is it really not possible to honor Thomas Jefferson's contributions to ur country, and also teach our kids that slavery was wrong, and Jefferson's involvement in slavery is similarly wrong? Because PP is right. Since human beings a complex people, and a product of their time and encvironment, we are going to be hard pressed to find anyone to name schools after if we apply 2017 standards to 1700/ people. . And those people we do find, some future generation will find fault with. I will says that Lee and Stuart end up being unusual cases. If we were further South, it would not be a big issue. But FCPS, in its infinite wisdom, named these schools after Brown v. board as a protest against integration. In other words, the were named less for southern pride, and more to make minority kids feel unwelcome. That's a real problem that FCPS needs to address. |

Chesterbrook Elementary School. The area used to be called Lincolnville because free slaves settled there. Their church is still catty coroner from the school and is still active. The white supremacists forced the name change in 1897 when it got a post office (now closed). |
