Is this the end for Sup. Jack Smith?

Sure because it typically works out well for school districts to reject well-settled Supreme Court law. Just ask the Mayor of Little Rock how that one went.

Haven't you heard? Montgomery County is officially "uncooperative" with ICE. But I suspect that will soon change. People will demand better for their children in public schools.

The can trample on federal law to become sanctuary enclaves, so clearly they're not tethered to the law. Reject the illegals and get sued, let it play out in court. Every taxpayer in the district will get behind rejecting these leeches from enrolling, especially if they ever announced how many millions are wasted on these foreigners. I'd bet it's easily $1X,000,000 per year in MCPS.

Well said and thank you. These people openly and brazenly disobey the laws they disagree with and then hide behind laws that advance their agenda. So many of us are sick of their criminal hypocrisy.

I was called racist for complaing that teachers should not be paid to take are kids out of the school and support anti Trump pro illegal alien marches. You can do it, but on your time, not with our tax dollars. Hope this poor girl didnt march...

Jack Smith is an embarrassment to the MCPS community. I had no strong opinion about him until I attended a budget town hall meeting recently at a local high school where he was featured, along with County Council Member Rice and the President of Montgomery College. When it came time for questions posed by members of the community, he was condescending at every turn. When he wasn't being defensive, he was throwing others (the BOE, teachers, parents, etc.) under the bus saying he had nothing to do with a variety of decisions because he didn't arrive here until last summer. At other times, he suggested that it would take all day to answer a question and just moved on to the next person. I was appalled by his demeanor and by the majority of his answers (mostly lack thereof).

Though I wasn't at the meeting at Rockville H.S., by all accounts it seems that he reacted in the same manner, dismissing those who don't fully agree with him, avoiding the issue, or name calling. I agree with all previous posters who have suggested that he just doesn't care about people: the students, the parents, or MCPS staff.

The best way I can sum him up is to say that he just doesn't "hear" people. The things he said regarding the legal obligation of MCPS to accept students regardless of legal status are all true. But before he made those statements, he really needed to "HEAR" the concerns of the parents. Next, he needed to discuss how horrifying the rape (not event, or incident) was as opposed to sugarcoating it and making our county schools seem safer than they actually are. He needed to speak for a moment as a parent and grandparent. He needed to reassure the community that he would move mountains to change security procedures in this county if need be to keep all of our students safe. All of this needed to be said before he could go on to say all of the politically correct stuff about educating all children.

In my mind, he has failed our community in many ways during his short tenure here, which is not surprising considering his tenure in Calvert County. I have no idea if he's "toast" or not, but I would certainly prefer for him to go.

He'll probably soon be leaving for "personal reasons".
Move on, Jack. This gig is up.

+1

(except for the part about the budget town hall meeting that I did not attend like the PP). But, her post sums up my feelings.

Very well said. Thank you. I also hope the school board acts to remove him from his position as superintendent of schools. His is creating more of a black eye for schools in a situation that is already just terrible.

As parents of MCPS students, we want Dr Jack Smith resigned or fired. It will hurt MCPS in the long run.

I actually think the superintendent is GREAT on issues of curriculum. His role as public face of the Moco board is an impossible one and the community is just too demanding for anyone to juggle.. Firing him will just result in a less qualified person coming in who won't be able to do better. Most sane persons would stay clear of this position. What he needs is some sort of press secretary.

two major situations have happened under his tenure, the protests which he didn't get out in front of and just let them play out until someone was hurt and then this rape by illegal aliens.

Both made national news before he decided to be a leader. He may be fine as a puppet for the school board and council but that is all he is.

Gosh, you are correct. I hadn't even thought of his poor response regarding the student walkouts after the election. His record has been a total failure. As for the PP who said he's great on curriculum, I am curious (not accusatory) as to what you are basing this on? What is his record in this regard?

Arent there activist organizations teaching people how to come here illegally and get benefits? Maybe 25 year old men have a good thing here... Warm school, feeds you three hots and girls too eh??

And the a fair question is not why such men would not in the same school but the same class room as a 14 year old?? Actually why would a 14 year old girl who speaks no English be in the same class? If a teacher has to focus all their attention on one student, how can the others learn??

These are legitimate questions, not racist ones. But to be pilloried a racist for asking is a behavior we are getting fed up with.

Yes, PP, YES! This superintendent shamed parents with his email, calling the complaints xenophobic and racist. We get to ask questions. You don't get to try to SHAME us to deflect from the bigger issue here. And for the record, yes, I'd be JUST AS UPSET if this were a white 18 yr old boy raping a 14 yr old girl. He's trying to turn this around to keep parents quiet. And that is why he must go.

Exactly. Except we have no idea how old this illegal immigrant is. He can say any number.

I agree, we get to ask the question. We are parents and taxpayers. He had no business starting his press conference discussing the emails rather than the rape. And he should have answered questions for at least an hour or until everyone had a chance to speak.
