Nice. He's not even worth 1/8th of that after seeing him at the meeting on Tuesday. He just wants to sail on into retirement? Or maybe he wants to run for office when he's done with MCPS. But, he certainly doesn't care about the kids.

I think that you meant to type, "He didn't say what I want him to say."

NP here. What did he say that impressed you? The article I read in the Post did not provide specifics about his statements other than MCPS lauds itself on being welcoming to all.

What did he say that the top PP interpreted as not caring about the kids?

Here are some things he said:

"That is not the community I moved to last summer. It is not the community I want to live in. We should say that we're not going to paint all students who speak another language, all students with another skin color, all students with another religion with a broad brush because of a really terrible incident."

"It's wholly and entirely inappropriate for any of us, anytime, anywhere, to say we're going to deprive a 6-year-old, an 8-year-old, a 12-year-old ... of an education because a horrible incident happened last Thursday in one of our schools."

He's a great change for the district and should be promoted, not denigrated.

Okay, Jack

Whatever. You obviously know little about his professional and personal background if you don't think he's a fundamentally decent guy who walks the walk and a far cry from the politicians holding the post in the past.

For the OP and others who are upset, what would you have preferred him to have said?

That he intended to break federal law and ban undocumented children, or the children of undocumented parents?

That's obviously what folks want, but he can't say that because he can't do that.

I agree. I work tangentially with him. Was skeptical when he was hired. But he's quite brilliant and forward thinking. All the complexities here? He gets it.

This situation is horrible. Utterly horrible. There is nobody who'd please the public with answers on something like this. Nobody.

I also work tangentially with him and 100% agree. MCPS is lucky to have him.

Absolutely. Smith is working within a system here, just like any other elected or appointed official. Yes, he could tell frightened folks what they want to hear, but it would be a lie. He can't bar immigrants from schools, he can't break federal law (nor do I suspect he wants to). He can't tell us that every high school will have video cameras monitored 8 hours a day. He can't tell us nothing awful will ever happen inside a public school.

Wow! There sure is a lot of age discrimination on this site. It's the equivalent of racism.

+ He doesn't give a crap about the victim or our children. He wanted the whole thing to go away and tried to cover it up. His time is up.

So the people who know him and work with him respect him and the people who read the headlines or meet him in passing don't. Interesting.

It would have been nice had the not blamed the situation on ALL MCPS employees, seeing how teachers don't write the policies that allow brand new (to the state) 18 year olds enter the school system.

This thread is the very picture of hysteria. It is ridiculous.

We want these adult criminals to be offered evening classes.
What part of that don't you understand?

That was laughable. I hate when people don't take accountability. He's pathetic. The buck stops with him. He doesn't get it. This job is way to high profile for him and he's NOT a problem solver. He behaves like a coward who cares more about looking good not about the school system and the kids. Shit he just tried to throw everybody he works with under the bus. Disgusting.
