I will say Merry Christmas to everyone and won't let anyone stop me

Personally I don't care what you say to me, but I will say Happy Holidays because I have no idea what you celebrate.

Now its being turned into a greeting with the secret agenda, this is absurd. There is nothing wrong with saying Merry Christmas IMO as a holiday greeting to wish someone well. End of story.

No, it's not being turned into a greeting with a secret agenda. What's happening is that people are becoming better educated and aware, and realize that there's a huge portion of the population that not only doesn't celebrate Christmas, but may have their own religious celebrations that occur during the November/December time frame. Saying "Happy Holidays" incorporates Christmas, but also the other religious holidays the person might celebrate, and Thanksgiving/New Years. So when I hear someone wishing random people "Merry Christmas," I don't assume it's malicious, but I do tend to assume the person is probably a little less educated (not in the bookish sense, but in the worldly sense).

Uh yea also why we cannot say things like Thank God and why kids who mention reading a bible are sent home for the day from school, I could go on...when does it stop?
How moronic to say you think the person is less educated if they Merry Christmas. Just about everyone i know says it and I can tell you there is not an under educated one in the entire bunch.

When someone wishes me a Merry Christmas I say it right back and I dont' even celebrate it! If someone says Happy Holidays, I say Happy holidays right back. NO MATTER WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ITS MEANT WITH GOOD WILL. Lets not read into it any more!

Honestly, to me the assumption that they're just not that educated in the worldly sense is a kindness. The other assumption I could make is that they're well aware of the issue and understand the arguments on the other side, but have decided to deliberately exclude others and wish kindness only on those who celebrate Christmas. The former is benign, the latter malicious. No matter which assumption we make, though, I am always polite to people when they greet me.

Have your worldly mind considered it is about them, not you? Not everything in this world is about you, my friend. When I say "Merry Christmas," I express my holiday mood. I am not in DC, so there is a lot less ass-clenching here, thank goodness. I don't know how you people handle all those opinionated assholes who deem themselves and their opinions as the center of the Universe. I can't say I'm an atheist, but I was raised by atheists in an atheist state, so spiritual forays aside, I'm pretty secular. People like you still annoy me to no end. I wish you were not around anymore.

And there we have it, what this "Merry Christmas" parade is really about -- it's all about you, and screw everyone else.

Screw everyone else exactly how?

I like to send "Season's Greetings" cards in mid-July with the notation "It's SUMMER!"

I haven't read this whole thread because life is too short and you sound like an idiot and/or troll. But please, do scream Merry Christmas to me. My MO during the holidays is to respond to "Merry Christmas" with "Happy Hanukah" so be prepared for your mind to blow.

I usually wish people greetings for the 20th of Kislev, the anniversary of when the first Lubavitcher Rebbe was released from prison.

If people do not like that, I begin shouting.

"Happy holidays!" conjures up an unpleasant image of a washed out scholarly type who spent her life studying Martha Stewart LOL

That seems perfectly reasonable. You're extending a greeting.

NP - because there are several holidays being celebrated around this time of year, and you don't really know who celebrates what. So, rather than extend a greeting that would be inclusive of the person you're talking to (like "happy holidays"), you're deliberately choosing to "express your holiday mood" and only yours. In other words, "I only give a shit if you enjoy the holiday I celebrate, not the holiday you celebrate."

Huge portion? More than 75% of Americans are Christians, and many that are not choose to participate in Christmas traditions anyway. I wouldn't exactly call that a huge portion. How about if I only leave you 25% of your salary? That's still a huge part left, right?

On the flip-side if you took out 25% of my salary, that is a huge portion missing. Yes, 1/4 of something is a huge portion.

Here is the deal-

If you have always said Merry Christmas to those you know and sometimes don't know (like a sales clerk, someone at the bank, etc...) then I firmly believe you should not have to change what you have been doing. If that is how you wish to extend a holiday greeting, then by all means continue.

IF however you have always said happy holidays but just to piss someone off (potentially) you now only say Merry Christmas then yes that is kind of crummy move. I do not think personally there is anything at all wrong with saying Merry Christmas particularly if you are like me and were brought up to say it. I have been saying it for years and years.

I get very festive and into the season come Dec. and frankly say it to many in my path...normally it is always meant with a smile and either a "you too" or Merry Christmas to you as well.

I think MOST people (clearly not many of those on this thread) see it for what is, a kind way for us all regardless of religion to partake in a beautiful holiday/time of year. It is much more about the spirit than anything else.

OP, ask yourself what would Jesus do?

Moreover, how would Jesus perceive you?

As a warrior for Christ?

Or as an unyielding, obsessive harpy using Jesus as an excuse?

What have you done for Jesus today?
Given up your possessions -- including the computer, cell phone or iPad you perpetuate this thread on -- to give all your $$ to the poor and follow him?

Somehow, I doubt it.

I believe in Jesus, OP, I just don't believe in you.

OP is a crank causing trouble. That's all.

^and I don't mean causing trouble by saying merry Christmas. Causing trouble by posting a fake OP.

Just do it.

But not in the spirit of anger.

In the spirit of generosity, and sharing.

That's the way to celebrate Christmas.

Merry Christmas! Feliz Navidad!
