Murch moving to lafayette

I still wonder what the cost per parking space will be...and no one thought the parking was for parents, it still seems like a huge cost, why don't they have the size of the school fit the physical space that they have? that might make sense instead of other schools not getting a renovation so that this one can have underground parking.

If you look at what is budgeted for Murch it is millions less than many other schools with smaller enrollment numbers and even hundreds of millions less than schools which serve half the number of kids than Murch. If you think Murch is holding up other school renovations due to underground parking you haven't been paying attention for the last decade.

10:15 above was wondering, in the context of the parking discussion, why people don't use public transportation to get their kids to school. I don't see that two are related but maybe someone does.

Issue parking permits for street parking for the teachers. That is free. Use the millions you ate spending on an underground freaking parking garage (and how is 40 slots enough for all the staff in the first place? I would assume it is not) and get some science labs. Crap like this is why I Don't donate. I don't want to encourage more boondoggles.

I actually would love parking permits for street parking for the teachers, and use this extra space for some education-related function. That said, I do think there is some kind of legal requirement for a certain number of spaces and if that is so, having underground parking is preferable to taking up even more play space at Murch.

It just all sounds like a school that size with that many parking spaces does not fit well on the existing property.

In addition, due to historical designation of the old building, the new construction has height limits and, due to the fact that part of the site is actually owned by the National Park Service, only part of the lot can be built on. Lots of constraints on the site.

it just sounds like a bad lot to build a big school on.

I believe parking is part of the teachers' contract.

The underground parking lot will be the first thing excised from the budget when DGS decides to downsize the plans after construction has begun (as has happened with the auxiliary spaces at lafayette). Digging out a garage space is such a huge expense for so little benefit I would bet it never happens.

+1, just seems unrealistic from the start

Yes, I think Shepherd was going to get a parking garage too, and that was nixed.

Except that the you haven't looked at the plans. Review the plans (and other parts that require digging out) before posting. Small lot so actually not much digging.

Sounds like a lot of you posting on the parking issue don't know the school and haven't gone to meetings to looked at the iteration of plans. Murch isn't close to a metro like Janney or some others. Because of the lot restrictions and size, surface parking would take away valuable outdoor play space for the children. The costs of the renovation, as a PP explained, are comparatively low. Street parking is already difficult even before adding the staff cars.

Murch isn't close to Metro? it is a 10 minute walk from the Tenleytown station - cut across Ft. Drive and down Nebraska to Chesapeake.

Given the amount of street parking available in the area that is unused during the day, I think the idea of a "faculty" permit (not a regular RPP) that would allow for parking within a few blocks of the school should be ok.

Spending 10's of millions on underground parking there is silly.
