Murch moving to lafayette

Anonymous
I attended my local ANC meeting last week on another matter. I was surprised to hear this discussion. They are currently setting up a trailer city outside lafayette to use while it is being remodeled. Apparently once that renovation in complete there is talk of leaving the trailers and having Murch move into them while it is renovated. Apparently this would save the city something like 7 million dollars instead of recreating the trailer set up again over near murch.

Talk about a congestion nightmare. Maya DC can provide school buses to haul the students from Murch to Lafayette.

Hard to believe. There will be no capacity to handle that number of kids on the grounds during the school day.

OP, do you know who was discussing this option? Anyone from DGS or DCPS?

So 1400 kids would be using the playground? Being dropped off/picked up at the same time? Would need to be evacuated in case of emergency? Sounds like a terrible idea.

What a terrible idea. That is why I have no doubt it is under consideration.

This is my question. I've heard this discussed by parents as a "what if" scenario, but I've not heard anyone in any sort of official capacity suggest it.

Like PPs, it strikes me as logistically crazy--and I also have to imagine the Lafayette community would be incredibly resistant, unless DCPS made it very worth their while.

On a smaller scale, Murch did the same for Lafayette in the late 70s.

I heard talk that they would stagger the school day to allow for less congestion during pick up and drop off.

I actually don't think this is a terrible idea. Lafayette has the space, kids can play on the public park playground that is not being impacted by construction (which they do already), structure is already there, etc. Murch kids will have a decent seing space and lafayette hopefully will receive some financial compensation (Maybe cost of building the swing space gets split between the budgets for two schools...).

The Lafayette immediate neighbors will lose their minds.

Isn't Lafayette getting a renovation? It seems that in our current economic situation, a school community getting a renovation should respect that renovations need to be done in a cost efficient manner.

Isn't the swing space cost covered in the capital budget? And the point is the swing space is built/being built for Lafayette next fall. Question is whether to keep it intact for another year or so and have Murch use it.

As a taxpayer without kids at Murch or Lafayette the common sense of this idea appeals to me.

But how can have 1,400 kids arriving and leaving the same site, using the same playground? Is that even feasible?
