We need to be sure that people FEEL good. We need to help people FEEL included. We need to acknowledge the FEELINGS of others.
Damn the FEELINGS of the woman who was shocked to see a man, YES, A MAN, in the woman’s locker room.
Planet Fitness will change its policy when some woman is raped in the locker room by a man posing as a transgender person.

What gym are you going to? I have four 24 hour gyms within 1-2 miles of my house in the suburbs and they are ALWAYS packed. I hardly doubt there is some conspiracy for men to pose as transgender in order the rape women. There are a lot of other things I would worry about before this even made my list of concerns.

Because it hasn't caught on yet. The awareness about transgender people is relatively new. The communities are slowly growing, people learn more, it's more present in every day life, schools etc. The day will come when criminals catch on to the chance and take it. It's only a matter of time and once the first one does it there will be more. Just like with transgender people. One started. Then more came. Now there are many open about it, talking about it, being in the media etc. It will happen.

But my point is that most gyms are way too crowded for a rape to take place in a locker room. In fact, most public places such as restaurants, shops, etc. are fairly crowded and have people going in and out of the bathroom. If there is a tucked away bathroom that does not get much foot traffic, then there really isn't much to stop a man (dressed as a woman or not) from trying to commit a crime there. It's probably a good idea to just be vigilant whenever you're in a secluded place, but I don't see why this should preclude equality for those who are not gender conforming (keep in mind many people have ambiguous gender due to chromosomal issues). Should they be forced to hide at home because you are scared of some hypothetical crime that doesn't seem to even be a widespread issue?

Really? Rapes take place is schools. During school hours. One would not think that possible but it happens.

Yes, there is a facts. I am a woman and I don't feel safe with someone with a penis who call himself woman. This is the fact.

Where is the fact to support that someone who looks like a man (no matter how does he call himself) feel unsafe among the same looking men?

Here are some more facts:

1. Unless you look in women's underwear, you don't know what their genitals are. It's highly probable that you have encountered transgender women and didn't know. You're probably even been in public bathrooms with transgender women and didn't know.

2. There are many, many documented cases of violence against transgender people. Including murder.

This is apparently not the situation that happened at the Planet Fitness. It was clearly a person who looks like a man, so please, don't twist the facts.

Huh?
Now you know that the Planet Fitness men are going to cause harm to her? You can't possibly know that, any more than the women at Planet Fitness know that the transgender woman is not going to cause harm to them. You can't have it both ways, again!

How many cases are there of transgender women harming women in women's locker rooms?

How many cases are there of men harming transgender women?

Actually, here's the real question for you: Do you think that transgender women are women? That's the bottom line, not all of this sophistry about how can anybody know if anybody is going to harm anybody. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that your answer will be no.

What facts are being twisted? It's not a fact that the only way to determine what's in people's underwear is to look? It's not a fact that there are many documented cases of violence against transgender people?

You simply cannot generalize that women would be safe and men would be unsafe and use that as your basis for wear a transgender woman should be. You are back pedaling because your argument fell apart
FWIW I don't know what the solution should be, it is an interesting topic and a good debate

You are ignoring the big picture here: how does the woman in a woman locker suppose to know that a big dude with muscle and penis is a woman?

I'm not interested in philosophical debate about the limits of human knowledge about others. I'm interested in real people being able to use public facilities safely and conveniently as part of their daily lives. Is it likely that a transgender woman's use of the women's locker room places other women in real (rather than imagined) danger? No. Is it likely that a transgender woman's use of the men's locker room places her in real danger? Yes.

The fact discussed in the OP article - the transgender person in the discussed story was looking like a man.

How do you know if the next man who walked into the woman locker is a REAL transgender or just a dude with different intent?

Have you met many transgender women who present as men? Have you met any transgender women who present as men? Have you met any transgender women at all? Or transgender men?

How do you know anything about anybody ever anywhere? Better stay home.

You know if someone has a penis. This person does not belong in the women's bathroom or locker room.

Um, no. Exactly the opposite.
