Inspired teaching question

C'mon Lee parents- you are friend with IT parents. We are all trying to find the best educational opportunity for our children. Common denominator is that we all feel that IT or Lee is a better offer than the local DCPS.

My presumption, like most parents, was that dismissal today was due to construction as the kids were told they were not allowed to start playing until Monday. I for one told my little one that the concrete would have to settle.

Even if Kaboom! or the National Volunteers Corps is using our school building as a backdrop, fine. They gave us expertise, funds, and energetic people to provide a scarce resource. Work went into the grant submission and we will all reap the rewards as our kids will have a chance to play without having to go round the block (or down the street etc.)

Lee parents (as should IT parents of PS3/PK4) should remember that most communities don't offer free education, let alone the 179.5 days of the year we are benefiting from. (Yes, I subtracted the 1/2 day for Lee families.)

More constructive conversation should be focused on how to improve all schools, find viable middle and high schools where are children can eventually go into should they outgrow their current environment.

My Kindergarten age kid is certainly entitled to a free public education in most of the country as well as at Lee -- Lee currently goes to first grade.

All the media I've seen so far has used the Lee end as the backdrop with Lee kids in the windows.

I don't really think any Lee parents blame IT, and if they do that blame is misplaced. This is what happens when POTUS comes to visit. But communication so far has been vague and some are frustrated about why this has happened, and how they are able to take the afternoon off or find child care at short notice.

Well, we don't blame IT parents. IT the school/board want the visit and don't care how it happens since it means more visibility/more donations. Perhaps that is also why Lee is out of the picture both verbally (no mention of us) and materially (kids gone). They want only their name out there. I have a question - is the Lee sign still up? Was it taken down

Everyone was in Kaboom t-shirts, not ITS t-shirts. I wouldn't be so quick to assign an ulterior motive to ITS - that's crazy. I'm sure they didn't require Lee students to be gone just so that they were out of the way of the photo ops. There will be a security/secret service reason.

The sign was up this morning.

Rhode Island is already a mess for anyone commuting in that direction.

3rd party looking in, it looks like Lee parents are more upset that they are not getting publicity than they are having half day of school. They likely needed them to be out by 2pm or something and Lee likely said to close before nap rather than after. It really doesn't look good to see Lee parents rag on a school or other parents for something that is out of their control. Our family used to be in an incubator space, we never would have expected to be a part of a school build at the primary space. Can you imagine Yu Yong in its first year complaining that Potomac didn't invite them for an event?

I am reading the thread and there are at least 3 posts that refer about being left out.

For the record. What I find disconcerting is:

-SHORT NOTICE - our family plans work (for wages) schedules in advance around the published yearly school calendar. Obviously there are unforeseen emergencies, natural disasters, and weather events that come up. But a publicity event is not one. We were informed less than 3 full work days that we would have to forego work today.

-PURPOSE OF THE CLOSURE- if it is for a visit of a VIP, why does a press opportunity trump a school day for children? It is ironic that a 'day of service' event displaces children from learning, school lunches, etc. If it is for some necessary construction need then I feel comfortable/ understand- things happen. If it is just to provide a backdrop for a press shot- that is yucky.

-EARLY PART OF THE YEAR - This is taking place at a time when children and parents are just getting used to a schedule, routine, and a new school building. It is also taking place at a time when parents from both schools have not had time to get to know one another and build trust. Feels like we could all provide one another a bit more grace. It is hard for folks who do not know one another very well to give each other the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps we should work to get to know one another before judging? Or at least get all the facts first.

-NOT INTERESTED IN ATTENDING THE EVENT - If my school/ organization worked hard to get this opportunity I would be delighted. Congrats IT/ Kaboom/ Etc.

For those implying that the Lee parents are jealous or just wanted to be a part of the event - you are not talking about our family. Not interested in/ feeling excluded from an event just to be next to some limelight or VIP. This is DC- VIPs are all around us all the time. Been there, done that. Not dazzled just to catch a glimpse or be on the news. Not interested in the flash.

Would much rather just have the substance of a regular school/ work day for my child and the other children for whom education is vital.

File a complaint with the POTUS!

Come on guys. Can we all agree that it just sucks that Lee got closed early? We are all really friendly with eachother. As an ITS parent, I am thrilled to be neighbors with such a promising school. I have had nothing but great encounters with our neighbors. I don't think IT had anything to do with closing the school. Only a handful of ITS people are there. Can't we all just get along? I really sorry that this played out this way.

Not an IT or Lee parent, but it's ITs school and Lee just shares the space. It was an IT event not a visit from the Charter School Board.
