Thanks for the attitude, I'm actually not at home (can you imagine?) - so I thought someone would be nice enough to share a link. But, just the typical bitches. |
I just looked on their website and couldn't find a link. |

Why are the FCC parent or parents so defensive? I'm a huge fan of daycare, going on year 8 with a child (not the same child obviously) the same school, and if this happened at our school I'd be up in arms. And irrespective of whether or not I decided to pull my kid, I would absolutely want a good public discussion of what went wrong, why, and what changes can and should be made.
I'm really glad this incident is getting a lot of exposure - it will hopefully serve as a cautionary tale and prompt other daycares to reassess their safety policies. After the JCC incident, which is not far from my kid's daycare, I told the directors based on what I'd read on DCUM. They hadn't even heard about it, even though the JCC confirmed it publicly. I'm grateful to DCUM for being a conduit for this kind of info (and even more so to the OP for sharing the story and ESP to her awesome nanny for stepping up to try to help the lost boy!!) Btw I think my child is at the same school as a PP who wrote about a teacher being fired for having failed to stop/notice that a child snuck thru the door when another parent left with their child. I'd forgotten that resulted in someone getting fired. |

It seems that every time you hear of a child left at a park, indoors during a fire still or left on a bus it is the counting system that failed.
We should think of ways to help our preschools and daycares find alternate ways to identify our kids. Maybe a name game or buddy system where two kids are paired together. Counting heads has proven to be not very reliable. |
| Fire drill is what that should say * |
| What bothers me most about this is not that the kid was left behind -- I can sort of understand that happening with a big group of moving kids, making it hard to get anaccurate head count -- but that no one noticed for an hour. Don't the teachers know and like their kids enough to notice when someone is missing? Either the teahcers are disengaged, the classes are too big, or both. |
I wonder if it was the lynch mob on DC Urban Moms? |
Well, it was! DCUM - better than the police scanner. |

A terrible terrible situation no doubt. Should the center be shut down? Probably not, but what absolutely needs to happen is some real shake up. I am troubled by this situation for obvious reasons. I am a parent...and an FCC parent at that. I am even more troubled by the fact that issues regarding the attentiveness of FCC staff while off site is not a new issue, and that this is the second major incident that has occurred at FCC in the past six months! Another child was severely burned by hot water. All completely unacceptable.
Considering these major incidents together with several other observations I have made regarding the lack of attention to detail, such as stair gates consistently open while children roam around freely and lapses in staff certifications, lead me to think the shake up needs to include not only staff but also leadership. |
This. Kids move and squirm, which could lead to accidentally counting an "extra" kid that isn't actually lined up. There's also more than one adult, so I can also see how you get a situation where one adult thinks the other adult got the count. But once they are back in the classroom, how can they NOT register that they are missing a kid? Even if you assume that it wasn't a whole hour, even if it was 30 minutes, that is just way. too. long. I've gone through the thought exercise, and I can honestly say that while I love the child care facilities we've used, thought the people were wonderful, etc. etc., if this situation happened at my kid's site, we would withdraw. This is a major breakdown. Due to the ages of the kids, there must be more than one teacher, which means it's not just one "bad apple". There are fundamental flaws with the systems and process at that site. I'm sure the people are not evil, and I'm sure they feel terrible, but if I were in that situation, I just don't think I would feel comfortable waiting around while they sorted everything out. |
Good to know that the news is trolling DCUM for stories. Maybe eventually they will get their heads out of their asses and cover school lotteries. HEAR THAT CHANNEL 4? |
Wha?? The news people are trolling the Mean Girls Channel???? |
| I work at a childcare center and to hear this is horrible. We count children very often, every hour and at every transition. Upon entering and exiting the child care center with children, management does a head count of the children making sure that the correct number of children are entering and exiting the center. I am guessing management does not do this at their center? To leave a child unattended at our center would be instant grounds of firing. Not only that but possibly, considering length of time, police will get involved. This is neglect. Should the center get shut down? No way! This does more harm than good, to teachers, children and families. Should the rules and regulations be reviewed and improved? Absolutely yes. I am so glad that the child was safe. I am glad to know that others watched the child but I'm also concerned on why it took strangers an hour to contact police? An unattended child for an hour is a long time to finally decide to contact police. |
| I wonder how long it would have taken the center to notice the child missing if it occurred earlier in the day, rather than close to pick-up time by the father. |
