I guess I should point out that under normal circumstances, I don't have any idea who is viewing messages. I don't even pay attention to who is posting messages for the most part. But, once I identify someone who is abusing the forums (e.g. a sock puppet), I'll pull out all stops to track them. Not only is that information useful in preventing them from repeating their transgressions, but I think "sock puppet and I'll be into your business" is a bit of a deterrence.
