“True Safeties” that accept nearly every applicant but have retained great reputations?

UC Merced has a very high acceptance rate. ASU has also always had a high acceptance rate. You can get a very good STEM or social sciences education from either school though not sure about humanities. However, you aren’t going to graduate with an engineering degree at any UC or ASU if you can’t do math and physics. These schools are good for the kid that messed up in high school but is really smart in their choice of major.

The southern flagships are easy admits if you are from CA. For high stats kids that get shut out of UCs, UMD and Pitt are safeties that almost always accept them.

Only for Californians. Cal States have a one-year residency requirements: "Physical Presence: A student must be physically present in California ONE YEAR PRIOR to the Residence Determination Date (in which enrollment is contemplated). Intent: A student must intend to remain in California ONE YEAR PRIOR to the Residence Determination Date."

PSU UP does not accept nearly every applicant. They have like 100K applications, and accept maybe 55% to 60% of applicants.

My son is heading to Penn State. So, I am not a Penn State hater by any means but it is surprisingly easy to get in if you are OOS and you apply to certain colleges (Education and Agriculture).

But that could be said of a lot of flagships, including UMD. If you apply to CS/eng, you need high stats, in and out of state. If you apply to Ag Science, you don't need high stats especially if you come from a lower performing area.

Was just coming here to say this. As someone who once lived adjacent to the campus in the 90s then moved to DC, I never understood why Minnesota (and Minneapolis in general) was not much more popular with the DMV crowd. Especially those with strong average kids. Thinking about the people who get excited about Pitt, Delaware, Indiana and JMU OOS. EspPESHally those that cannot shut up about Pitt and how fun Pittsburgh is. I mean, I like it too -- no shade -- but have you spent time in Minneapolis?

If you're willing to accept the weather in Pittsburgh and/or Newark DE is a good enough city for you, then you really owe it to yourself to explore U of Minn
+1. They just don’t know the Midwest.
Pitt is Midwest

No, it isn't. You might get pummelled for suggesting that at a Steelers game.

Penn State is a safety of the "average" high achieving student.

28% of students submitted an SAT score. Only 37% were in the top 10% of their high school class.
25%-50%-75%
1280/1340/1410

If you have a 1400 or higher SAT and you are in the top 10% of your high school class you will be admitted.

But that's not what OP asked. OP asked: "“True Safeties” that accept
nearly every applicant
but have retained great reputations?"

Most flagships are safeties for high stats students but that's not what OP asked.

How easy is it to change majors once you're there?
