Minnesota is a flight away. The rest of those are driveable from the DMV. It's really that simple. Minnesota also doesn't have the stuff that gets kids excited about certain schools, like skiing in Colorado or New Hampshire.

It depends on the major. DD applied as an Econ major and her safety was UMinnesota and she was very much willing to attend due to its strong Econ department.

In that it lies between the two mountain ranges which contain the midwest and plains, (but is still in Appalachia), and is culturally a rust belt city, it's sort of, but it's not quite in the midwest.

It's a flagship located in a big cool city. I would think that would be a big draw. And lots of direct flights without extra driving.

U of Minnesota has a very good balance across several metrics. Well-ranked undergraduate majors (e.g., business #19, engineering #28, CS #39, economics #27, nursing #8). Unlike many schools mentioned above including Pitt. It's in the center of a 4-million-resident metro with NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL teams and is part of the Big Ten. It's not in the middle of a corn field that so many here dislike. MSP is a major flight hub with multiple direct flights to the east coast. It's also reasonably cheap at $56k COA with some merit aid. If Wisconsin is a poor man's Michigan, Minnesota is a poor man's Wisconsin.
