"Only" 30 percent is a lot when those 30 percent totally dominate campus social life.

Really? What do the other 70% do with their time?

Honest question. I don’t understand how this works on a campus the size of Wale Forest. Do the other 4,000 kids not have friends? Do they not socialize, have parties, go to events etc.?

It’s hard for me to imagine that 70% of Wales undergraduates spend four years feeling lonely or left out because they’re not in a fraternity or sorority.

Can anyone whose kid is/was non-Greek at Wake please weigh in here?

My ds goes to an SEC flagship where Greek life is about 10-15% of the population and it feels like much more. The issue is strength in numbers so they are emboldened, they are loud (literally and figuratively), have the most organized parties that promote exclusion, and generally attract attention to themselves because of their conformity especially right now during pledgeship. This is fine when you are in it but super annoying when you are not. Before you protest, I was Greek at this same school.

Gotcha. What is your DS doing to socialize instead of pledging? How does he feel about being there so far?

Emory was also out of reach if these were your options.

Correct. Much better than BC

Could the Emory kids hack it at UGA or GT?

Yes. Easily. Some full pays want to be around other full pays.

Why? Can’t hack it at a flagship?

Because being around kids who can only afford in state tuition is gross. Marry up

LOL what a moronic post. Most top flagships attract wealthy students that are richer AND smarter than you.

Wow. You couldn’t afford Emory? Have fun in Athens (not Greece)

Wow. You couldn’t hack it at UGA? Have fun being coddled (with nerds)

Nope.

This is terrible. I know kids at both Emory and UGA. Both are great schools in their own ways, and both draw top achievers. I would be happy with my kid being at either.

Well he actually did pledge. Then dropped. Because it took up too much of his time and he isn't really into conforming. He was torn because it is helpful to have an instant 'crowd' but he was finding other things he wanted to do with other friends he made more organically in his dorm and classes. He is extroverted that way but doesn't do well in a 'bro' scene.

Emory is not in the same tier as UGA and GT though. Statistically, you are highly unlikely to get into Emory and not the other two. Look, math and reading aren't your thing, and that is why your dear child is at a state school that isn't Berkeley or UVA. You can seethe all you want, but the tuition is a rounding error for many students at private universities and they like to be around similar people. Keep relentlessly tracking your 529 each year and hoping dear Suzy doesn't get into Miami so she can go to FSU or something.

If #37 & #41 are “not even close to top 30” then sure. BC and BU never claimed to be anything else. These 2 schools are great in their own ways and seem to stay in their lanes. For some reason that triggers pps who insist on starting a fake “prestige” war. BC & BU don’t care about your made up definitions and snobbery. But don’t disrespect their city or hockey.

By arithmetic they are somewhat close. The HS experience of achievement to get into a T30 v. getting into BC and BU is enormously different. One entails natural intelligence, sacrifice, hard work, and involvement. The other involves mouth breathing and spelling your name out.

BC isn't even in the city.

Admissions percentage differences do not indicate the level the education you get at these schools in the same broad tiers. Plus, ultimately kids get out of it what they put into it. Are you looking for bragging rights or a good experience for your student?
