College and University Discussion
| Wake and BC have better academic reps that Miami. Wake alumni network is also tight, with a lot of alumni in NYC, maybe less of a presence in DC. |
| BC is Jesuit with a much different feel from Catholic ND or Villanova (both great for different reasons). I have /had kids at 2 of these schools. They’re very similar on paper but each with a distinct vibe. I’d visit and go from there. ED big advantage. I’d be happy with my kid choosing any of these 3. |
No one ever described a Cane as nerdy. Not at BC either. Maybe a bit at Wake but I wouldn’t characterize any of these 3 as nerdy. |
| It’s too bad Miami wasn’t able to maintain its rise in the rankings when Donna Shalala was president. My niece graduated about 10 years ago or so (for the hot minute when Miami was considered the best school in Florida). She’s had amazing connections in NYC through Miami network. And still is a huge fan of the school- even after a T10 MBA degree elsewhere. |
| The vibe is so different at each of these schools. I would think the one your child prefers would be the best. |
| To the PP who noted Miami was generous with merit - is that only if you RD? |
Probably BC, but it really depends upon the particular student's interests (academically & socially) and career goals. Has the student & family visited all three schools ? My first thought was that on would have strong feelings about U Miami due to its location & campus culture that would separate it from the other two schools. BC has Boston, Miami has Miami & the Florida Keys, Wake Forest offers Winston-Salem and moderate weather. I assume that business or accounting is the student's intended major; is this correct ? |
Miami and BC entered the ACC together because they wanted to go as peers. There is little difference in academic reputation. Wake’a ranking has been severely damaged lately. |
| I've heard complaints about housing at Miami after freshmen year. |
Are you willing to share more information about WFU ? TIA |
Wake and BC actually have a very similar vibe, despite no Greek at BC. I have one at Wake and first thing sibling said after tour was, “the vibe is same as Wake”. Obviously location much different. Both extremely popular ED choices for A- students are our private. |
Ok Miami parent. Yes, Wake has historically (for 3 decades) been the highest ranked of this group in U.S. News rankings. However, it did fall in rankings when U.S. News dropped factors like class size and professor education level from survey and added in factors like percentage on Pell grants. Wake could improve its economic diversity but it still has the same extremely small class size and high percentage of courses taught by full professors that was responsible for its higher ranking. |
No. My kid was EA and we were full pay. |
They don't have enough on campus housing for everyone after freshman year - is that what you mean? But here is the sophomore dorm: https://hrl.studentaffairs.miami.edu/living-on-campus/our-residential-communities/lakeside-village/index.html |
Any of them but they all have different vibes and weather. |
