You can't speak for the entire state. |
| So VA kids like TJ don’t want UVA but love UNC but NC kids don’t want UNC? |
Those in NC without money absolutely want UNC. In state tuition at UNC and NC State is like $7500. Unless someone gets a full ride somewhere, that's hard to beat. My kids went to a NC public high school where only ~38% go on to 4 year colleges. A good number of those end up at NC State & UNC. |

Chapel Hill resident here. Did not go to UNC or Duke but married for 18years to UNC alum. I know lots of graduates of both schools plus a few UNC professors.
Tarheels definitely don’t have any feelings of inferiority when it comes to Duke. They do love to hate Duke when it comes to sports. And I mean REALLY hate, haha. That said, I think UNC folks are very proud of their school AND they respect the fact that Duke is a great school too. I’ve lived here a long time and never observed anything even close to a UNC student or grad feeling inferior when it comes to Duke. Quite the opposite! |

^lol, Duke is head and shoulders above UNC and has been for 50+ years. Very little applicant overlap with Duke and UNC especially outside of North Carolina. Large gap between Duke ranking at 6/7 and Carolina outside the top 25. Furthermore 90% of Duke undergrads are out of state while UNC is 80% in state. It’s a great sports rival but not an academic one. Focus on NC State who has more in common with UNC.

100% false. Those in NC who are full need/pell grant type kids have EFC=0 at all schools and pick the Dukes and ivies of the world over UNC when they have the choice. Those with partial need, 150-250k HHI, get better aid at ivies, Hopkins, Stanford and particularly Duke with their in-state need based program. It is cheaper, often by a lot, to go to these schools over UNCCH. It just is. The state of North Carolina loses their smartest kids even more than they did 10 years ago. At least the newer Duke funds keep a group in the state. Now if your post meant what DCUM calls "donut hole" (no need based aid anywhere), these days that means families with over 250k HHI and at some schools over 300k HHI. That is hardly "without money". Come on. |
| Did UNC RD come out yesterday? Crazy how fast gen z dumped reddit for posting updates, /r like Dartmouth are totally dead this year. Guess they all post on their own stories now. |
