UNC Chapel Hill

Had anyone read “Cheated” about the decades of academic fraud at Chapel Hill?

My DD (rising senior) thinks she is applying to UNC and seems to love the idea for some reason. We haven’t visited. We will let her apply but if she gets into UVA (in state) I think finances will have to be the deciding factor especially because she will probably go to grad school and we’d like her to have leftover 529 money for that.

In terms of context on UNC, it places among those schools at which selectivity has increased the most across recent decades when considered by standardized scoring:

1. Elon
2. UChicago
3. Ohio State
4. Pitzer
5. UCLA
6. UC–San Diego
7. Boston College
8. SUNY–Stony Brook
9. UPittsburgh
10. Georgia Tech
11. Case Western Reserve
12. Brown
13. UNC–Chapel Hill
14. Notre Dame

The only reason to attend UNC oos over Ivies, Duke, chicago et al is if one gets a true merit scholarship program with benefits (Morehead Cain). The majority of the student body is not impressive and per capita it does not do well for top companies and top JD/MD/phD. There is a large drinking and weed culture on campus much more extensive than that of the T15 private types, arguably more than UVA though not significantly. We live in NC and none of the really smart kids stay at UNC unless they have to financially or get moreheadcain.

Would you pick top 10 (full pay) over Morehead Cain?

If I was a donut hole family and having a full-pay kid would be a bit of a squeeze, I would seriously consider Morehead Cain. Also depends on the T10 for me personally.

I would have to think about HYPS, but I would take the Morehead in every other case.

HYPSM plus Caltech, assuming I can afford it without loans.

HYPSM, Chicago, Duke, Caltech, Penn, Columbia > Morehead-Cain

UNC is a well-balanced school with excellent academics, social scene, and community. Morehead-Cain is extremely prestigious and I would definitely pick that over Duke, Penn, and Columbia.

This last sentence is ridiculous.

I’m an NC resident. Everything they said is correct in our experience too. It all depends on your community and school.
