GOP spending bill seeking immediate $1 billion in cuts to DC budget

A part of what problem? DC has a balanced budget. It doesn't NEED cuts. This is DC local tax money we are talking about. Maybe you didn't know that DC residents pay federal and local DC taxes. It the DC tax money we are discussing.

Wherever you live, imagine your local tax dollars are funding your local services and the budget is balanced and rolling along just fine, then halfway through the fiscal year, Trump mandates that a billion dollars from your local government cannot be spent on your local services and schools -- not federal funds, local funds from local tax dollars -- and says you can't use your own money. That is what is happening here. (He can't take it away, btw, it's not federal money, so it going to just sit there, I guess while our trash doesn't get picked up).

These people do not understand how government works. Everything they try to do, they get wrong and make a huge mess of life.

Ironic that it is MAGA feds who actually will cause dC to defund the police in the end.

It's a great idea but that's only $50 million at best and we've already spent that much on the inauguration.

Between bike lanes and trails, vision zero, Capital One, school modernization, the H St streetcar, and the DC Jail annex we should be able to find half the cuts. It's the operating budget that will kill us. Federal police support and EdTech while both ripe for cuts doesn't come close to making up what's required under this bill.

Bike lane troll apparently couldn’t be happier with this poison pill in the CR because she thinks it will lead to a few bike lane projects being shelved.

Even ignoring the merits of this argument, it's unfair. It shouldn't matter to them if D.C. wants to waste its money, though -- it's local dollars, not federal dollars. The principle involved is local control, not fiscal responsibility; if we were wasting federal money, that'd be different.

Well, when congresswomen are assaulted in their DC apartments. And, Congressmen are brazenly carjacked. And when senior Congressional staff suffer life changing wounds. Then the merits sorta go out the window.

Therefore, cut the budget??? Make it make sense.

The DC Council in large part created policies that enabled the crime wave. They all played footsie with the BLM crowd. But NOW they are concerned about public safety funding. OK…

I’ve been a DC teacher for close to 20 years and because of home rule I’ve never had to worry about my paycheck until now.

The goofy council is on the Hill saying the CR will mean cuts to public safety. Also, they helped create the public safety crisis. Oh, well…

dc police should reallocate resources away from capitol hill to ensure no cuts in the rest of the city

Exactly! This is the council that legalized shoplifting. Unbelievable!

So because you don’t like bike lanes and liberal criminal justice policies, congress should take taxpayer money and just let it sit unused? I don’t follow this logic.

That's pretty much it, they seem happy that DC is having this money slashed even though it saves $0 federal dollars. Doubt they live in the city or have kids in the schools here because maybe then they would give a hoot.

They also care more about feeling powerful than they do about their own staffers, since a chunk of them do live in DC and have kids in schools.

This. Plus---while the Capitol has a police force---last time I checked---they do not have their own fire department.

Bike lanes are infrastructure that provide safety, cleaner air, and healthier populace. they aren't frivolous.
street Murals are about quality of life and providing "support" for artists and an artist community, which is beneficial to the quality of life in a community.
What are violence interuptors?
Where are these luxury apartments for the homeless?

Here you go. Only two examples of many.

"What are violence interrupters?"

"D.C. Council Member Arrested For Allegedly Taking Bribes Related To Violence Interruption Program"

https://www.ncja.org/crimeandjusticenews/d-c-council-member-arrested-for-allegedly-taking-bribes-related-to-violence-interruption-program

"Where are these luxury apartments for the homeless?"

"D.C. housed the homeless in upscale apartments. It hasn’t gone as planned"

https://www.reddit.com/r/washingtondc/comments/be19wp/dc_housed_the_homeless_in_upscale_apartments_it/?rdt=58136

Thank you. I'm a reporter and have heard from many sources that the "violence interrupter" programs is totally ineffective and is being used to funnel money to friends.

It's true that these are all local funds and DC should use them however they want to. It's also true that the city wastes a tremendous amount a money.

Best case scenario to me is that this gets reversed, but that the increased scrutiny leads th council to wake up.
