Bill was spearheaded by the DMV delegation (Van Hollen, Warner, Alsobrooks, Kaine) and then Susan Collins apparently helped get agreement of Republicans.

Not a done deal but the bipartisan support is good news. Regardless of what you think about the CR vote, I am really grateful to the VA, MD, and Maine delegations for stepping up to advance the interests of disenfranchised DC residents.

Would also love to know what turd in the House inserted the provision to the CR that stripped the funding in the first place. No one will fess up to it.

Whoever did it was smart because it created an incentive to negotiate and Democrats can claim they did something while the GOP got it's bill through.

It's all a game to them and the GOP is playing better (and of course dirtier but that's politics)

PP and I agree with you and wish the Dems had just voted no on cloture and forced a shutdown. But I'm also deeply relieved that DC is not losing a billion dollars in funding. It's stupid it even came to this but I am grateful to the VA and MD senators for advocating for it and making it happen. It would be worse if they'd just let it go.

You’re counting on House Republicans to do right by DC?

The same ones who created this crisis?

You sweet summer child.

Thankfully, Trump and the GOP appropriations guy appear to have endorsed it.

So DC won’t lose the money after all?

If the vote goes our way. Still trying to figure out how it got in there and why - odd 'accident'

Never attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence and all that. I think people would rather pretend the people who write important laws actually know what they are doing and are mean for some reason.

The reality is this is most likely new people bad at their job and in a rush.

Why not both? The weird DC funding issue was pointed out repeatedly before the House voted, and Norton introduced an amendment just to fix it, and it failed. So even if it got in there by accident, it was left in there on purpose. Then the House skipped town. So I think it's incompetence + a little malice.

I agree and whoever said this upstream is right: "It's all a game to them and the GOP is playing better (and of course dirtier but that's politics)"

The Dems are playing one move at a time and getting lapped by the GOP stringing moves together. I'll be surprised if the house doesn't take the opportunity to tie passing this budget fix to getting the DC leadership to fall in line with other parts of their agenda.

Completely agree. Dems are reactive and being caught flat footed. But we, as in DC, need to stop relying on the national Dems. When push comes to shove they do not have our back and it seems clear that the autonomy issue will happen again.

We need MORE BIKE LANES! Not less.

STFU now PP.

I’m confused. If this is money that belongs to DC for things that DC allocated in the budget, what happens to the money since the house didn’t approve the budget? Is this money that was already in hand — or money that DC anticipated receiving in taxes?

In any case, this is truly horrible news. I’m sorry that DC is being played with like this. I’m guessing that MAGA plan is to
slash the budget, blame Bowser and the City Council for the many things that will crumble, and try to use that as a reason for bringing the city more firmly under federal control. I’m outraged, but not surprised by the vindictiveness of this move.

PP— yes, this is money that DC already has in the bank, so to speak. And what happens is it just has to stay there. Basically it is barred from being spent.

It's DC money that Congress already approved last year. So it's cutting 1.1 billion local dollars from the FY 25 budget congress approved last year.

It's only an issue this year because Bowser and council gave a fortune to Leonsis. That's what grew the budget by 1.1 billion. Note that no one talked about clawing back that money, just from schools and police...

It goes into our own (DC's) reserve fund. We still have the money, we just can't spend it.

It wasn't a gift. DC bought Capital One Arena as part of a $515 million deal and then leased it back to Leonsis. Then, DC started renovations on their new arena.

It wasn't a gift you say? How long will it take to make back that $515+ million on rent?
