Here's how to report your neighbor for not clearing their sidewalk

We disagree that "it's a responsibility". Very location specific. For many areas - no one is walking to school, no one "needs" the sidewalk. Extremely location specific.

I live in falls church and this is the rule:

“Per City Code, residents must remove snow and ice from sidewalks surrounding the property 12 hours after the snow stops falling. If the snow falls at night, residents have 12 hours after sunrise to remove it. Snow / ice must not be placed on city streets.”

That’s a whole lot of “must” for it to not be the homeowner’s responsibility.

but that's Falls Church

Re: location specific and living in Fairfax County, I'm shoveling a sidewalk -only- if someone is actually going to need to walk on it.

I'm not going to do it to show-off what a good neighbor I am, and complain that others aren't as good a neighbor as I am.

But, but, but.......you must be out there before it even stops snowing so that the miserable dog people can have a clean sidewalk.

In DC, most of us do. And a middle aged guy lives down the street in a $4M house with 100ft of sidewalk that he never clears despite it being the only route for 20 kids to elementary school. Reporting him now. He could ask for help and neighbors would do it for free but he’s awful.

The Swiss Embassy is a big offender in Woodley Park and you can’t tell me it’s because they are enfeebled or can’t afford salt. Tons of people, including school kids, use that sidewalk and it’s treacherous with a hill and a curve.

DDOT needs to fine itself—its failure to de-ice sidewalks on bridges is a dereliction of duty.

I’m in full support of coming down hard on those who don’t do their part to make it safe to walk in the city.

I agree.

Any advice on where specifically to report people on the 311 app? Not seeing anything…

I just got back from walking my dog and there are so many homes that are completely untouched and a few people who chose to block the sidewalk instead of parking in their driveways.

Why would they park on the sidewalk if they have a driveway?

Exactly.

I’m a Northerner experienced in these matters. This was very heavy snow. We have 2 able bodied adults and 2 teenagers and it took all of us going out multiple times to shovel on Sunday and yesterday to get the driveway and sidewalk cleared. And that was with one of our neighbors pushing his snow blower around the block midday on Sunday - without that, it would have been much harder. I had to get a metal landscaping shovel out to break up the chunks. Salt does not help much until after clearing walks for whatever snow and ice remains.

We have dogs but have been walking them on the plowed street, since there aren’t many cars driving about.

I don’t judge too hard if people don’t shovel their driveway or sidewalk in these conditions. They will have to suffer most of the consequences. I do judge people who don’t remove the snow from the top of their cars before driving.

Unfortunately Fairfax and Prince William counties don't have enforcement, to my knowledge.

What is with all the bad neighbors in this thread? Is that the community you want to live in? One where everyone shirks their responsibilities? Be a good neighbor. Either figure out a way to clear your sidewalk or ask your neighbor for help. If you ask for help, be willing to help them in the future.

You are a hateful person. There is no reason to go around reporting 80 year old grandmothers who are unable to shovel their sidewalk.

Fairfax County doesn’t require you to clear your sidewalk at all.

I won't report an 80 year old or disabled person (and we know our neighbors since we are in a community!), I will and have helped them shovel or done it all, but I will report lazy neighbors.

Now you are making excuses for your bad behavior. Who ate you to judge with neighbors are lazy and which are not. The odds are that code enforcement will cite everyone on the street that has not shoveled their driveway. They don't just selectively fine the people on the street you report.

She also knows everyone well enough to know all of their disabilities, but not well enough to just say "hey. susie, I noticed you haven't shoveled. Is everything ok? Can we help you?"
